Your undertaking market research to see if a potential business avenue is going to be profitable. I think its an excellent idea.
Some people can't take a joke. So i will edit the last part.
Keep up the research.

seriously though the shop i go to (if i ever) i go to because the blokes are reliable, don't rip me off and HAVE DECENT CARS THEMSELVES. i would never trust a mechanic who drives around in a piece of crap.

yeah the manchanic that i go to he has a 4A-GZE race keto so he loved it when i brought the sprinter in there and he actually know what one was. and he was really interested in the car
any way i like him because he tells it as it is, no beating around the bush, and explains what his done or what needs to be done. and if he notices anything he will tell me and say keep an eye on this and not letting it destroy itself so he can make 5 times more money fixing it when its broken. i don't mind paying a little bit more knowing that he'll look after the car and not thinking its just anyother car because he knows it just not another car to me.
and as you'll probly know every customer is different so you'll have to treat them differently. never push people into things, give them options
I have been ripped of by a mech that i kept going back to time and time again, I had no idea he was ripping me off cos he treated me like a good mate, he would always ask if i wanted a beer, he would make me feel like a valued customer when explaining things to his employees, using phrases like "you have to do this one 110% its for a good customer" and when it came down to it i was happy going there, he could also tell me realistically what was worth doing to my car and what was a waste of money.
Now i go to a guy that fucks me around big time, he is always telling me my car will be ready and it never is!!! but he is a mate of mine and the only worthy mechanic to do any sort of performance work! his work is trusted Australia wide.
I work in retail training people how to sell better and make more money, and the best salesman I see always have 1 thing in common, they treat the customer like there friends, not customers, they bend over backwards to make a sale, without confusing the customer with to much information.
^^ beat me to it
Treat your customers like you would treat your friends
No bullshit and good prices, obviously not "mate rates" but don't take advantage of them
Too often have I seen or heard first hand accounts of workshops taking advantage of noobies/younger guys simply because they don't have the mechanical knowledge.
The one workshop that was similar to yours would be at the start, is here in Brisbane, a guy named Brad, workshop is Boostedxtremes.
He is the qldsupraclub official mechanic and basically has built his business from word of mouth, you now need to book 3 weeks ahead at least just to get minor servicing done, and had to move into larger premises. All due to his no BS attitude and experience.
Also, if you can't do something within reasonable expectations for a customer, don't attempt it or do it just so you don't lose business, refer them to someone who can and build some trading partnerships.
make sure u have a good rep on cars that u have worked on! word to mouth is gold these days, especially when online communities are plentiful
edit: just look at all the pple looking for a good mechanic to work on their pride and joy!
i think it is all down to personal prefference. experience and promotion is the key to a successful business. enjoy yourself and work hard. it will pay off.
Everyone has made some really good comments so far.
One thing that i would like to ad, is don't be afraid to call people. If something goes wrong, or are you wont be able to finish the job for x number of days/hours, let them know asap. There is nothing worse than being caught out without a car, and if you do manage to get it finished ahead of schedule, they will be very pleased.
Anyways, good luck.
Alright well, since theres a unanimous decision on why you go there what would you like to see your performance shop offer, what i mean by this is, having membership special for repeat customers, or track days, even track support at events. One idea, of mine was to have these special little membership deals goin for return customers, where you get discounts, information on upcoming events, like race meets or track days, and the ability to have it all sorted and booked and ready for that event.
What would you's like to see in that respect?
And sotiros86, there is nothin i hate more than the wankers that try and run shops, that don't have the balls to say look this has happened, this is why it happened, this is what i'll do to fix it. I have worked in a shop that the pretty boy running the place used try and pull that stunt, I was sacked for abusing him for it.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (aaron_drift @ Jun 16 2008, 07:23 PM) </div>So what your saying mate is that if you change someones brake pads or fix their diff centre you should not ensure that the work has in fact been performed correctly, especially if you are the service manager of a larger workshop with a reputation to uphold, you my friend are a wanker.
