Went to get my new car (AE86 sprinter) rego checked and it failed on the steering due to a clunking noise that it made. I can't tell you were the noise was coming from or when it came (I was just sitting in the car watching the wheel sipn from lock to lock) but I know it needs to be fixed or I can't drive my car (leagally). Any ideas what this could be and how to fix it?

Check the rack mounts are tight
otherwise the teeth are worn
as if the inspector didnt tell you what/why/how?
should have asked what needs to be done then get it fixed : )
inspector said there were too many components that could possibly be causing the problem to defect me on any single one so he just said get it fixed

I am sorry to say, if you can't find the clunk yourself, you probably can't fix it either. Take it to a mechanic. It shouldn't cost much.
You could always start at pedders with a 28 pt check. They'll tell you to replace everything and quote you $1000+. Then ask them what makes the clunk and replace it. Mine clunked because the ball joints in the LCAs were phuked. While your at it, change your tie rod ends if they're old, replace dodgy old bushes and as long as your rack is okay, welcome to the world of decent steering and no floating feeling!

tie rods usually always go before rack ends, as mentioned control arm ball joints get sloppy and noisy, if its a clunk on bumps sometimes the nut that holds the insert into the strut can come loose, or the nut on your top hat, but to me it sounds like a tie rod, they usually crack on a horizontal plane. Racks can get lumpy and noisy but never really a clunk more of a slight grindy knock. But at the end of the day, if you have the money go through and replace rack ends and tie rods, get your rack looked at by a good mob, new ball joints and get a decent wheel alignment.

mechanics way of checking these 2 components.
get on your butt wrap your legs around the wheel in question (as if you were humping at it) loosen up i don't mean literally go at it.
then with your hands caress and feel your tires on the left and right
and then shake the tire from left to right if you feel lots of movement that's your answer. (this is all done whilst the car is on the ground.)
