a 4AC wont bolt up to an auto k series gearbox if thats what you were thinking about doing
I've got an '83 ke70 auto, the 4k has 390,000kms on it but the body is in decent condition, i was going to put a 4age+t50 into it and buy a new daily until its up and running, after going out and seeing what you get for 2500-3000 (don't really want to spend more than that for a daily) i decided to buy a running 4ac and use that while i buy and build a 4age in my spare time, ill be keeping the auto box as i can't find a decent t50, i get an auto ae71 spares car with the engine so i got the ae71 xmember and engine mounts sorted, if anyone else has done this or has any heads up as far as things i may run into if you could let me know, I'm trying to get the car running well on monday so id like it to go as smoothly as possible. i was thinking of taking photos and doing a write up for the tech articles section, ive been told the 4ac is a far better engine than the 4k and seeing as decent 4ages are becoming hard to find this conversion is a good stepping stone on the road to ge. any help is appreciated and wish me luck![]()
ive got an ae71 auto gearbox to use, would that be the only issue? thanks for pointing that out though, sometimes obvious stuff like that is what causes issues
The only other consideration is that you'll probably need the auto AE71 tailshaft too.
if your going to put in an auto 4ac, you might as well just buy another 4k
all the effort of putting 4ac in (essentially not that much i guess...) but 4ks are easy to get
and a manual 4k is going to be way better to drive than an auto 4ac?
there is a dude selling a 4k and 4spd gearbox for like 90$ on rollaclub, not sure on what state though..
the only real advantage of putting a 4ac in, is to get all the drivetrain sorted (hydraulic clutch, gearbox t50, tailshaft etc) untill you can afford a GE motor
but if your going to auto, i don't see much point, but thats just my opinion....
if you got all the parts there, convert away!

yeah i agree with ke70 dave,
in 4k to 4ac you have to setup the hydro clutch, pedal box, and what not when it is manual
but if your going to go auto and save for a ge when uw ant the ge manual at a later stage you are going to have to do just as much work.
may aswell keep the 4k and save for a t50 box and all the bits so you can do 4k auto to 4ac manual. then when the ge time comes you don't have to do anything in terms of gearbox/tailshaft hydro clutch.
