There were 9 different factory axles made for the AE86, as listed:

#1. early drum brake
#2. early drum brake with LSD
#3. early disk brake
#4. early disk brake with LSD
#5. AE85, AE86 SR spec, S series, drum brakes
#6. late drum brake
#7. late drum brake with LSD
#8. late disk brake
#9. late disk brake with LSD

The same axles are used for left or right.
The axles for LSD are slightly shorter to suit the Toyota LSD.
All early axles, disks, and LSD are common to the TE71/TE72 models with T series diff.
Late model axles have a different spline to the early ones, but bearings are the same.
Disk brake axles use a double row bearing.

The length of the axle (made for LSD or not) is not critical when you use a aftermarket LSD, such as TRD.
The axle housing between early and late model is identical.

But the question of eightsixboy, relates to axles out of another car that where too long and ground shorter to fit AE86 or similar.
