yes on my red 86 i'm only running a VL Turbo external pump and thats it. it works great, never had any issue although when getting down around 1/4 tank when you go fast around corners it causes surging. if you keep it above half it never does this.

    Sorry to hi jack .

i don't know if this would work but ... i have a s13 180sx turbo intank fuel pump lying around .. if i could convert it to fit inside the ae86 tank would this work:

s13 intank fuel pump > surge tank > vl fuel pump > main fuel line ?

Well I managed to to attach an in tank pump to an AE71 pickup. It was a small pump but was still a rather tight squeeze in through the top and very tricky to attach to the pickup. Since sold the rig and bought a JDM AE86 tank.

Oh and if you're going to pay $550 for all that above, my JDM AE86 tank only set me back $250 with pump also.

    Hey mate,

when i done the smallport conversion into my ae71 at the start i just used a honda 140hp outboard fuel pump as a mate of mine's a marine mechanic and they had a spare brand new one. I had that mounted on a piece of starboard above the diff and that was substantial enough until i got down to a 1/4 of a tank then it surged.

All i did then was found a 1 litre surge tank on the web for $60 and a small electric fuel pump that i used to have on an old ke70 with a 5k and it was perfect for an NA 16valve.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (sherlock @ Aug 20 2008, 06:46 PM) </div>Well the tanks are exactly the same outside shape so that helps a lot. The main important difference is the filler neck... Now the AE71/KE70 have an external breather pipe whereas the AE86 one has an internal (to the filler neck) breather pipe. What this means is that you can't just swap the necks over, that and the base of the AE86 one is slightly larger so you couldn't do that either. Now the length of them is pretty close if not the same except the AE86 doesn't screw into the filler recess like the E7 one does. It also doesn't extend far enough from the very top so that the rubber piece in the E7 will stop fuel from going spilling into the boot whilst your filling it up.

It kinda hard to explain without photos sorry...

What I will do soon (tank isn't mounted properly atm) is to lop the tops off both the fillers and put the E7 one on the AE86 one using a rubber joiner. That should solve the issue. Other than that, the tank bolts up fine but you'll also need to do something about your fuel lines.

I DID run a 1L surge tank when i first did my 4age conversion in my ke70 - all setup in the boot, with external lifter pump running to bosch VL pump. Decided to get rid of all of the gear from the boot because (a) the lifter pump was f$#ken loud and (B) authorities don't like fuel setups in boot

Now running a custom made in-tank setup - its the commodore setup one of the guys mentioned above. Got the in-tank pickup pump running to the VL pump - all now mounted under the car and alot better - heaps quieter, and havent had any problems with surge yet....

No need to go overboard with surge tanks etc - i've run both, and reckon the intank is heaps better - just keep a little fuel in it all of the time :2thumbs:
