I just bought a sleeve kit off eBay that was apparently for an ae86 but the inside diameter is too big for my t-18 struts and the top cap's seem to be too big for my excel g dampers I measured the sleeve's and they have an inside diameter of 55mm so I was wondering what car this sleeve kit is for?

Your T-18 struts probably had a diameter of 2" or 51mm. So you need to buy a coilover sleave that is very close to that size. And you probably want the adjustable spring seats to suit 65mm ID springs. The coilover conversion you are doing is a conversion, something to be thought about, not just something for every kid to bolt together. Often when building a coilover strut, even if you have a kit, you will also need a lathe, a welder, and a brain.

    wow, thats a little harsh.

some of the cheaper generic stuff you can buy is not actually intended to be a tight fit onto the strut. also some of the really cheap automotive stuff on ebay is sold by vendors who arent really very well informed on what theyre selling.

is the sleeve steel, and were you intending to weld it to the strut, or just place it ontop of the spring perch? you might still be able to use them, its not going to probably be the most satisfying job from an engineering point of view, but it should be able to be made to work safely.

    post some pics.

get a small 1cm section (for each strut) of 55mm OD bit of pipe, most are 3/4mm thick. weld that on, then slip the coilover sleeve onto it

it's not ideal, but it isn't failtown either ... some of these things just requires a little bit of thinking, unfortunately not all of the kits are straight-forward

if your saying weld on a peice of od55mm diameter pipe as a sleeve, and they are 3/4mm thick, that gives in internal diameter of 53.5mm? (55mm minus 2 x 3/4mm) and mr rockster said the diameter of the strut is 51mm, thats 0.75mm either side of play? i dont think thats such a good idea.

how good are "proper" sleeve kits, do they fit snuggly on the outside of the strut? or do they all have ~0.75mm of play around it

    though 0.75mm isn't much i must admit...

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (ke70dave @ Sep 8 2008, 10:12 PM) </div>i'll say 0.75mm isn't much ?

slydar's kit (custom compact) is awesome IMO because it sits VERY snuggly. as in, if your struts have any paint, they wont fit..

but i have seen/owned various other coilovers with much larger coilover sleeves. i would say the sleeves were originally to suit R31 struts and other old toyotas/nissans. just a guess

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Jonny Rochester @ Sep 8 2008, 09:05 PM) </div>I've already done this conversion once before and I do have access to a MIG and TIG welder as well as a mill and lathe, I'm not asking how to fit them or how to make them fit I just wanted to know what car they might be for?
