    hi all,

The last few days iv had a strange metal on metal sorta grinding sound coming from underneath the car somewhere...now i originally though it was the exhaust because i have blown up countless mufflers so it wouldn't suprise me and it wasn't that bad.

It has slowly been gettin worse and i was planning on gettin it up on the hoist 2moz....

This arvo though the noise was pretty consistent and a very harsh vibration began whenever any torque was put through the drivetrain!

Now its friggin bad....any bit of torque and i experience an earthquake. free revs normally, clutch in and drives perfect still.

Im thinking clutch or thrust bearing has shat or something???? not sure though because iv never encountered this issue.

Any help would be great and it will definelty be in a workshop 2moz gettin patched up!!!

    Cheers,
Its a natro SR20 sorry but you guys seem pretty onto this type of shit.

    Tailshaft center bearing methinks.

Get yourself under the car and give it a good shake, if it's got a heap of freeplay, there's your problem.

If not - The gearbox input shaft bearing / throwout bearing will make noise depending on whether the clutch is in or it's in gear, and even then you'll only feel it through the shifter.

So i think tailshaft center bearing.

Yeah the vibration can get pretty violent, especially if the center bearing is completely fucked.

You don't have a scissor type jack?

Normally it will happen over a longer period.... so that may not be the problem.

    Check it out anyway.

If you're still using the standard tailshaft and stuff with a higher powered motor then that may be the result of its accelerated possible failure.

But the best way to find out what the problem is would be to have a look at it on your brothers hoist

    Happy hunting.

i had a similair feeling in my old ae71. It started as a really light vibration and became a horribly loud vibration/sound. It got so bad i pulled over on the side of the road one day to have a look and i noticed that the bolts on the front half of my tailshaft were loose, 1 was gone and the rest were finger tight.

Was lucky the tailshaft didn't drop down and dig into the road and send me onto my roof.

    Good stuff.

When you get the box out, check for play in the input shaft, check all tailshaft bolts are tight, check for play in the diff nose even?

Faultfinding is about having a good look at every possibility.
You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?

I'd suss out what your UJ is first before dropping the box, I'd also take the tailshaft to get balance, you might simply have a bowed shaft that's had a heap of weights stuck to it.
