    Default Making an ARC-style airbox.

    Yoyo.

I'm thinking of buying a plenum etc for my 20V, and then i thought of airboxes. There aren't many off the shelf (1?? Arc only?), and it's stupidly expensive

Which made me think i could make my own - preferably just like ARC, which has a full panel filter.

Questions are (to those who know / have thought this through / just feel like contributing or talking shit):

    1) Half the idea of this is to keep it relatively cheap - i'm thinking of just making something that could house a VL/VN panel filter, as they are retardedly cheap for a high-flow/k&n filter. Or are there better flowing / cheaper / smarter options out there? I don't want to skimp on the performance aspect of it either

    2) Inlet from the throttle body/intake pipe would obviously come from the side - would it be best to have the filter on top of the airbox like most of the ARC units? Or would it be better elsewhere?

As you can see, i haven't thought this through - i'm hoping you guys just spoon feed me haha

    Thanks, Seamus

VN-VS airbox isn't really ideal, I tried using one as a base and it just doesn't fit well, especially in a JDM car with the radiator overflow where it is. i did make a very crude fibreglass bottom mould of the wheel arch but rushed it and it didn't turn out that well.

It's funny you started this thread Seamus as I've been thinking over the whole air box thing since the motor has been out. What I've come up with so far is making another fibreglass bottom for the wheel arch, use the cut bottom half of a VN-VS airbox, mount it upside down on a slight angle so that the filter is facing the hole behind the headlight. I've already got some ducting from the bottom of the bumper up behind the headlight to help with air flow.

^ That sounds pretty good timbo, but i'm wanting to make something blingy

And others, sorry if there's some confusion - i just mean using literally *just* the panel filter - and make the airbox

So i could have something "pretty" (it's just another excuse for me to get to do some welding heh).

I was basically thinking of making EXACTLY this:

But making it so it accepts a filter such as this:

Anyone see a problem with that? Or maybe a better way of doing things? I'm open to any suggestions really

I have one of the ARC units, and it is a very nice bit of gear, with welded bellmouths inside the box to provide smooth, even airflow.

The only thing that im not really a fan of, is the fact that cold air isnt drawn into the filter, as there isnt much of a gap between the filter and the bonnet. I personally would like to see something which also incorporated a snorkel which drawers cold air from the front of the car.

I like your idea of using a commodore filter, as they are available from almost everywhere, as speaking from experience, i can say that trying to find one to fit the ARC box is a pain in the ass.

7OXIN, if you want some detailed pictures of the ARC item for reference, PM me, and ill send you some.

Would it be better to have the filter panel underneath so the air is being drawn in from the front bar and up to the filter? I think there would be more airflow from underneath rather than on top. There is one for sale at the moment

The problem with putting the filter underneath is that you will end up drawing a lot of crap into the filter, which could include water, and the last thing that you would want is to suck up water.

arn't they designed to hold a specific volume of air, its not just simply making a box that'll fit?
