Car - AE86 would love to know more.
motor - It appears to be a carbie?
use - Every day driving, potential project car.
problem - I would love to know exactly what model of the AE86 i have, so therefor i can search more accuractely knowing what my car "should" have in it, Engine / Suspension etc.
occurs/started when - I bought the car.
personal situation (if applicable)-
Just picked up a car cheap, love the shape, think i bought before learning like anyone these days, i just want to know what my AE86 has in it, How i can identify the model and any other help you guys can offer. Cheers.

it will be the australian domestic market ae86 or ADM as it is known. although it is still an ae86 over here, in japan it is equivalent to a zenki (early term) ae85. your engine is a 4ac and is not much good for anything except reliability and longevity.
just some quick differences between yours (adm) and more sought after japanese domestic market (JDM) ones-
yours has 4ac, t50 gearbox and s series diff with drum brakes and no lsd. body wise it will have black on the top of the tail lights and will say sprinter on the right side.
JDM Zenki (early models)
4age 16valve, t50 gearbox, t series diff some have disc brakes and lsd. body wise they will be similar to yours
JDM Kouki (later models)
4age 16valve, t50 gearbox, some had power steering, t series diff some have disc brakes and lsd. body wise they can come with different tail lights (redlines) and fog lights at the front in the grill. i believe some also had sun roofs.
now there are also the trueno version which has pop up headlights and also black limited which are just rarer trueno's.
most common first mods is an engine swap to either a 16 valve or 20 valve. 16 valve is alot easier and cheaper but some will say not as good. get a t series diff if you upgrade engine. get some new springs and shocks to lower it or coilovers and look at replacing your bushes.
this is just a basic intro for what you have gotten yourself into, just know once you start spending money you wont stop, lol. there is alot more info out there so do some researching and look through members rides to see what others are doing. also throw some photos up of yours in a build thread and people will answer any further questions you have

I currently have a ZXR250C that i have spent over 10k on, I own an E30 318is which is stock standard but i cant but love the look, i have owned commodores, wrx's, my first car was a 88 CRX, ive owned alot of cars for my age and i am completely aware of what il need to be doing, a quick question, is what kind of power am i looking at to get this baby sliding? whats the average cost on one of these 16 valve or even a 20 valve conversion can i do any easy modifications to the Diff? im a fitter/machinist by trade but im also a pretty top notch welder, what do you think the first steps in getting this baby ready for some wednesday night track drifting is? i would like to get working on this asap.

in the wet the 4ac will do to start with. if it were me i would get a t series diff ($200-400) then either weld it up or buy a 2way lsd (up to $1000) then sort suspension. bc coilovers are cheap ($1300ish) and they are pretty decent for a cheap coilover. then you could get powers steering arms and a lock spacer to get more steering lock. check out AJPS, he is a site sponsor as he can get everything for you
engine conversion vary alot. the engines themselves are not too expensive but there is usually a bit of work to do to get it running in a rwd car as most are in front wheel drive cars. just keep an eye out in the for sale threads.
i also used to ride an 89 zx2r. pretty fun bike for a 250.

Welding a diff, how reliable is it? what are some other common mods? affordable is nice. sorry might not be the perfect thread for it im kinda going off topic.
most people weld their diff at first until they can afford an lsd. it is illegal and some say dangerous but i couldnt tell much difference between my cusco lsd and my old locked diff, except when parking at the shops.

try your wreckers. look fro rwd celica's. they will be the most likely to have them at the wreckers. on the build plate it should have a t in the diff section. also grab the tail shaft with it and hand brake lines. you will use the rear half of the tailshaft that comes with the diff and fron half ae86 tail shaft as they are 2 pieces
