If it works like a 2way and theres no unusual noises.. why worry yourself about it?
hi there i was just wondoring if it's normal for a 2 way trd LSD to have lots of axle free play, when i have the wheels in the air and turn the rear wheel it will turn a cm berfore it will turn the tail shaft and the other wheel to me this seems like it's to much free play, i've been driving it like this for a month or so and i've have had no problems so far. just wanted to know if it's normal or not.

do you mean backlash?
yeah its normal
if you took your wheel off and did the same thing at the hub you would find it would be a lot less travel in your backlash. remember the diameter of the tyre is a lot larger than the diameter of the crownwheel in relation to the pinion
na it's not the backlash that im talking about, im talking about the splins on the axle moving around in the spider gear, i set the backlash and then had it's checked by a specialist so i know thats right
If you are SURE that it is the axle splines moving in the centre then you have a real problem. Usually there is 2/5 of 5/8 movement between those splines.
It sounds like you may have a late or Kouki diff centre (big splines) and the early, zenki axles (smaller splines). They fit together, but give lots of backlash. If this is the case you are in for a headfuck. Either finding axles to suit (difficult), modifying your diff to take E series axles (lots of work) or getting a zenki centre and starting again (time and money).
Hen
well it dosen't make any noise and it's been fine for a month now so i think this lsd may have come out of a diff that might have been bent for camber maby
but that wouldnt give any free play in the axle? the only thing that makes sense is the kouki centre
stroked 2L ca18-ae86 in the build...eta xmas 2012?
Your LSD may need to be shimmed (tightened), if you bought it secondhand you should have stripped it and given it a tickle, if the LSD is a bit loose and you leave it go too long you risk damaging it further. An LSD is not a locker, it does slip a certain amount depending what sort of driving you are doing, I`d like a dollar for every vn commodore diff or for that matter any holden diff that came into our workshop absolutely fucked because some animal did too many donuts or burnouts (yes donuts and burnouts can indeed result in your wallet been raped.
WARNING: ALL LSDs REQUIRE REGULAR MAINTENANCE ESPECIALLY IF YOU KANE IT REGULARLY, EXCEPT FOR VISCOUS LSDs.
and that said 8Ball VN's and the like use cone type LSD's which are prone to thrashing out after some hard use... seen quite a few only last 4 months of street driving from brand new. they are just a shit LSD.
a good TRD 2 way will last years, just needs oil changes and check the breakaway torque settings every now and then
