not sure if the jdm ae86 came in auto's, but the fwd ae82/ae92/ae101 came in auto
Firstly this is not an auto V manual topic, the car is automatic, it's staying auto, your WILL NOT convince me or the owner otherwise. Deal with it!
Now thats out of the way, what options are there to put a rwd auto behind the 4ag's? (silvertop 20v if that makes a difference)
Currently running the ae71 borgy, first one lasted about 12 months. Second one has been built and beefed up a little so hopefully lasts a bit longer, when this pops a better option would be nice. In our searching we havent found any real options short of the nightmare of going a custom bell housing. 4 speed would be nice but not necessary.
Whats out there that would be either a straight bolt up or somewhat of an easy conversion?
Thanks
Simon

Wouldn't the AE71 3 speed auto bolt up? Surely you would be able to just get an 8 bolt flex plate, no? I'm sketchy with auto shit, very minimal knowledge.
there were some jap 86s that came out auto
JDM AE86 used the Aisin A42DL box, which is a 4 speed with lockup torque converter.
According to ToyoDIY's part# cross reference, no other car came with that box.
Edit: Short of that, go find yourself another Aisin box and cut/shut the bellhousing.
So many cars have them. Including lots of Volvos, lol.

I'm just retelling stuff I've read previously on the internet here, but apparently there are similarities between the AE71 auto and oldschool Trimatics. Possibly some Trimatic "performanc" bits could be used improve the AE71 box.
Easiest option would be to swap in a 1JZ and then autos are super-easy to find and fit.
Thanks for the link stain, it's a start but it's rarity makes the ae71 auto more attractive - free and plentifull!
Its in a sierra benny, 1j will struggle size and weight wise.
Is there any 'W' boxes or similar that could bolt up with some off the shelf adaptors?
im not sure about ae71's but the auto ke70 box i have sitting here is a trimatic. oddly it has a gmh label on it
W box is manual.
Id stick with the ae71 auto box, its tailor made for the job, and they can be kitted up to be a tough box if you wanna drag race. Not as bad as you might think.
yeah i'd say ae71 auto while using the flex plate off an auto fwd 4age. can't guarantee this but it seems like the cheapest option
