You need to set you pinion angle with adjustable trailing arms.
Hey guys,
ive had an issue recently where i got my ae86 back on the road, but when its under a lot of stress so if i change gears hard or when i was on the track and clutch kicking sometimes you would hear a large bang noise, the only two things ive noticed is that the tailshaft or diff has a lot of play was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is normal if not what would be the cause? il be linking a vid where im showing this, aswell as near the end i can see a few minor scrape marks about 50mm up higher than where the tailshaft sits normally looks like its been hitting the body aswell,
any feedback is appreciated
You need to set you pinion angle with adjustable trailing arms.
Mine would make a big cracking noise when turning and coming on or off the throttle completely. Could be your back lash is set wrong. For that you will have to pull the centre of the diff out to get at the cw&p. I had mine adjusted at a diff shop for a 6 pack of beer as it only takes a few seconds to do. From watching your video it seems to have a bit more movement then it should but not an insane amount.
stroked 2L ca18-ae86 in the build...eta xmas 2012?
I had this and my tailshaft bolts where loose

That actually looks about normal. Don't forget there is play in the splines of the axles, and if not welded also the cross-shaft and pinion gears.
Does it have the diff head bump stop like some models came with? If lowered it's the first thing needing to be removed.

Tail shaft/diff yolk join slapping the floor when car squats is my guess. Lowered your car, gained power or removed your center bump stop lately? Or gained skill?
well to behonest there was a period where i didnt use the car more for daily use and i change the diff and rear sussy to coilovers around the same time period and its happened since then
in the video you can see some light marks on the body where the yolk joint has hit the floor a bit but doesnt look like it has frequently ? or hasnt made dents yet just light scrape
as for a center bump stop ive never seen one on my car so im guessing it was removed sometime in its life when it was in jp
I recon thats whats making the noise, probably doesnt look like its hitting every time because its hitting in the same spot, Get some adjustable trailing arms and send your pinion angle down... or raise the car (dont ever raise a car).
One of my 86's formed a massive hole there when the tailshaft yolk ended up wearing through.
Yeah, you probably need 4-link bushings and maybe adjustable lower 4-links, especially if your dumped.
Stock bushings are probably trash and axle tramp is causing your diff head to rotate up and smack the body. Doesn't need much of a mark to make a shitload of noise.
