you can buy special tools to get rounded nuts off, or like slide said vice grips or worst case weld a old socket onto the rounded off nut. i would not recommend bashing on a smaller socket incase you ruin something else.

drill the head off the bolt?

Cut the head off with a grinder?

Smash a smaller socket onto it?

Weld a bar to the bolt?

Id probably try the vice grips first though...

Is it a bolt you need to remove or just a nut?

If it is a bolt, buy a set of these.... Have saved my ass a few times

Start with vice grips first tho , and buy a decent quality brand screw extractor if you go down that path , the cheap sets do SFA

dw all good, i don't no why i didn't try vice grips in the first place, thanks slide. every face on the nut was striped bar one so i managed to get a good grip and crack the ####. i deal with this problem with a grinder all the time but i didn't think it was very appropriate for this situation, being a cam bearing cap and all. i was so excited i had to go do it just then, now i can sleep tonight man i love these forums, i dunno what id do without them thanks for the quick response everybody

3/8 long neck socket might do the job unless it's completely rounded. but like meadan said, there are many ways to fix this.

Edit: I take too long to post.
