gearing is important. although with a lightly modded smallport and a 3.9 you should be able to beat 3.8l commodores and keep up with corolla sportivos.

My bro Alex took his SR 86 to the drags last night.
It munched R32,R33 and R34 GTR's. Chopped commos of all years and a 07ish WRX.
The only thing he lined up to and lost was a VT with Micky T's which ran an 11.83.
The 86's best time was 12.05, but ran consistantly under 12.20 once Alex sorted his shit out.
Not too bad considering its set up for drift and the only thing we could do to get more grip was to lower the tire pressure and soften the rear dampners.
So really a well set up AE86 could be a decent drag car. Grip will be the main issue.

if were talking about if an ae86 will be a good project drag car in general....doesnt that mean all cars can run easy 9s...i mean....dragging is only for the deep pockets, more money = faster time reguardless what car, weight and all does have a big play, but put 100k in a camry and im sure it'll do 7s

i remeber a blue ae86 that was built for drag in a magz, from JEM i think? said i THINK...not to sure what garage did it, but was a light blue ae86 300kwrw+

cant believe this thread is still going. its retarded.

86s are fairly light and rwd. they transfer their weight to the driven wheels. means they launch pretty well, first say, 50m, you will beat cars with more power. wow, big deal. get it into 3rd and then youll get passed right back by anything thats genuinely half quick 9assuming the 86 is just ge powered).

theyre also live axle. so no reason they cant be just as good a drag car than any mazda. just no one bothers.

waste of time though, i think. rather break my car going drifting than drag racing.

No car was really built for straight line racing its what you do with it that makes i straight line racer..Ive been to the strip i could be into the 12"s if i kept practising and waiting inline for a run !! but i prefer to race it around the track and acutally drive it

so i finally got the chance to take the sprinter down the straight line at kwinana motorplex for woopass wednesday. lets just say it opened a can of woopass on all the imports there, including GTRS and subies. I didnt get the time i wanted which was about 11.8 because of traction issues but i did get 12.054. so close... i had 11 attempts and gave up in the end. it was so much fun trying and the car has so much more potential. its running standard boost and it was on street tires. i think it shows ae86s are versitile for circuit drift and drag, where other cars are not. enjoy your little hachies

Well, american muscle cars were... but that's neither here nor there... If you want a car to go fast in a straight line, all you need is a car (any car) and deep pockets.

Straight line speed is basically a function of torque (yes torque - and fyi power is basically just torque times engine speed), where that torque occurs and how it's spread through the rev range (you could be making 10,000hp @ 19,000 rpm, but thats not worth shit if you don't make anything up until then), the weight of your car, gearing and grip. It's pretty much a basic formula, if you know your power output, your gearing, your mass, your tire size, and whack in a compensation for wheel slip, you can make an excel spreadsheet that'll tell you how quick you'll do a quarter mile (and it'll be pretty close to reality if ur numbers are accurate). Punch in the values for the car you wanna race, and you'll know if you can beat it! This way you can know whether you'll be embarrassed before you have to front up to the line.

Now, you add some corners and you'll have to pay a substantial amount of money for some decent simulation software you'll have to know lofts of variables to punch in to get a somewhere nearby estimate of how fast you can go, but you won't really have any idea till you put it on the track.
