so the other day i put diesel in my car instead of petrol

no just kiddin i just wanna ask if anyone knows the difference in rebuilding a diesel motor over a petrol why its so much more expensive than a petrol motor

a rebuild kit for a diesel is about $900

i no its way out o left field but im sure some one knows and i dont really want to sign up to a 4x4 site just to ask one question

wanna be a lil more specific?

a "rebuild kit" for a petrol engine will be about the same. what do you get in your "rebuild kit"

a piston engine is a piston engine, they all work the same. just turns out diesels do the same thing slightly differently.

Just to specify and rebuild is not cheap for a motor, depending on whats wrong with it.. My 4age cost just under 6.5k to rebuild, In and out of the car from my mechanic, Thats With everything Fresh, Practically a new motor lol..

i was actually thinking that last night when i was making this thread im good mates with my machanic and i have never paid labour and i pay cost price for parts and i normally do as much as i can myself anyway. so i guess if you just dropped your car off and picked it back up again finished i can see how it would add up quickly hhmmm

    labour = expensive

i got quotes on 4age parts for rebuild, it went something like this

new pistons ACL with rings: 300
    main bearings acl: 150 ish
    conrod bearings: 100 ish
    full gasket kit (stanrdard): 250ish

so thats like 800, not far off your 900..

then the actual labour, there are to many variables to consider.

does it need a crank grind? how bad is the head? does it need "Straightening" (essentially machining everything)? does it have corosion and need welding?

for reference i did a head gasket job on my mates BP mazda, and the head was rooted. was rusted and needed straightening. $1000 dollars in labor later and we had it back (just the head wrapped in plastic)

and i got a quote to rebuild the bottem end of 4age. and the labor alone was around 1200$ for JUST the bottom end assembly/machining (no parts included) this took into account worse case scenario including overbore and crank re grind.

so thats 900 + 1200 + 1000 aprox for "standard rebuild" assuming that you are able to put the head back onto the block and put it all back together.

if you want a drive in drive out style thing...its a crapload more....

now i would say that these prices would be fairly standard across of "normal" engines. if you start talking about fancy engines like VTEC and forged stuff (sounds dodgy but the best example i can give) then the prices just sky rocket...

now in terms of diesel, maybe there is something special about the pistons for the high compression, so we'll assume that the pistons are say...600 (add 300 to guesstimated price)

    so thats about 3500...

so in conclusion, i have no conclusion, your gonna have to ring up a machinist and a parts supplier (usually the machinist too) and get some proper prices

6.5k seems alot for a drive in drive out rebuild of a 4age though.....i should be a mechanic and charge ppl 3000 to pull a 4age out of a car.....

damn i fogot a few things....

    oil pump: 200
    water pump: 200 (guess?)
cam belt and guide bearing: 100
    crank cam belt gear: 60?
    harmonic balancer: 150?

it just keeps going up and up. but like i said it depends what needs doing...

It is worth shopping around for motors. There are millions more diesel HiLuxs in Australia and south-east asia than there are 4A-GEs. Lots of options. You can get brand new re-manufactured motors on ebay, maybe built in Thialand or someplace. Lots on non-genuine parts are made all over asia.

Give your local Toyota dealer a try, you never know. My local dealership had a clearance sale of 5L long motors a couple of years ago. $3000 for a complete 5L from memory, no manifolds.

    THat is cheap Jonny!

Here i can get you a remanufactured 1HZFE long motor (no manifolds) for $14890. I know i saw the toyota trade specials today! Imagine if you had to pay retail?

But really, when you pay an engine shop to rebuild a motor, you are pretty much walking/driving away with a brand fucking new motor. but you would have to be stupid/dumb/love your car to do that cos Hyandai sell new getz for what $13000, And you get a brand new shell for that motor.

Me, i just spent $1k on my bottom end
