Or are you saying the top of the radiator was hot first?

Normally i find, when it can idle away and be fine, but once driving(higher speeds highway etcetc) and it starts to cook, its a flow issue (eg pump or radiator)
A cooling system should be under pressure, it will constantly cook if its never pressurizing, raises boiling temp once under pressure

when its pissing water out the overflow is it boiling??? or does the overflow jsut keep over filling??? cooked my first 4a because rad cap didnt seal and as soon as it got hot it didnt hold pressure it would jsut dump coolant into overflow(wouldnt boil) until one night there wasent any more water to dump

the overflow just does a "spurt" once its full and that's it, when i turn it off and it cools down the over flow slowly goes back down.

Paul: Yeah top of the radiator got hot first then after 80dergeees the bottom tank got hot. as you said the thermostat would of opened.

I will take it for a drive this arvo and see if it still carrying on.

My bet is that the headgasket is on the wrong way. Some of the cooling passages would be blocked preventing full flow around the engine. Either way, at this point in time, you should take the head off to check the HG isn't blown or on the wrong way.

if the head gasket was the wrong way, surely there would be other issues also

You'll normally have oil leaks around the place as well depending on which way it was put on. The other thing it could be is a 20V headgasket instead of a 16V one.

Not necessarily...depends how wrong you get it,if put on wrong from front to back rather than from side to side...
You prepared to pull the head off to have a look Jon? Will need a new gasket and possible head shave...

the gasket was on the right way, it ran and drove perfectly for a month before the water pump pulley + fan failed at 70mks.

Happy for anyone to look at it.
