NSW legal ride height?

just a quick question to all you NSW and sydney guys.

my guards are covering a bit of rear tyre nothing crazy but got pulled over this arvo and cop said your whole tyre has to be showing i got 3 weeks to change it. pretty sure thats not a law but just checking with you guys if you have had similar stories and what the legalities are, im pretty sure its just a measurement not if your whole tyre is visable

Well if you've got an 86 and you're tucking tyre, its too low without an engineers cert. And if its that way because you're wheels are larger, you're also up shit creek because overall rolling diameter is not allowed to be increased without a cert either.

2 inches is all you are allowed to lower without an engineers cert.

ehhhh no good aye, its a ke70 btw my bad. iv got 13x7-5 with stock guards so its not crazy fitment at all. iv been pulled over a fair few times and they have gone over my car and never mentioned height once.
lets just hope the same cop doesn't pull me over again

go to the tech article section, i have a thread with the RMS spec sheets, technically you measuring from guard to center of wheel , there are spec on there thats "legal" for that car(min and max height)

Ground clearance, guard to tyre clearance, guard to centre of wheel, headlights must be certain height above the ground, and as Golberg said, more than 2" needs engineers cert.

Pretty sure that is some of it as well.

ive been told clearance between rail and road surface must be no less than 100mm...

and heard stories of hw patrol using coke cans - "if rail clears a coke can - its legal"

tyres are not legal if they are 2 inches larger than factory standard diameter...

width of tyres/track not legal if more than 1.5 inches either side of factory standard


last 2 points are not regularly picked on because the police dont know all the specifications of particular models - that would be more of a "over the pits" scenario...

Yeah that is true, but I was mentioning it as just because the car may clear 100mm off the ground, doesn't mean that it IS legal

The issues regarding tire diameter and track are both incorrect for the Eastern States of Australia. All Eastern states now use the NCOP or VSB14 as the guideline for modification of light vehicles.

For passenger vehicle the maximum increase in rolling diameter is +15mm or for 4WD it is +50mm.

Regarding the track of the vehicle you can only increase the track by a maximum of +25mm total or +12.5mm for side. This is measure from the centreline of the tire and as such the width of the rim has no impact but the offset does.

Lastly regarding the minimum height of the vehicle, the limitation is that when lowering suspensions you must retain at least 2/3rds of the orignial suspension travel or a minimum ride rolling clearance of 100m which ever is the higher. The way that this is normally represented is eyebrow height which is measure from the center of the wheel to the lip of the guard.

Under the NCOP it is not possible to 'engineer' (Well you probably could but it would be very expensive exercise) for these items, it either complies or it does not.

police have a little wheel, that if they can wheel it under your car your sweet (lucky it fits under fuel tank with ease, but if he looked trailing arm mounts way lower) i think the rim size has change recently, about to go to work ill check
