motor / part in question - in tank fuel pump

problem - maybe not working?????

occurs/started when - recently


Ok so i think my in tank pump has busted as my surge tank is not filling and my external VL fuel pump is sucking dry just making alot of noise. anyone know if i can run a VL pump in the tank aswell as a replacement?
Also what are the best ways to check if the in tank pump are working?

Just another note, my surge tank and VL external pump are located on the right hand chassis rail in the engine bay should these be in the rear of the car closer to the tank?
