So 2 years ago I bought a KE70 for a daily runabout to use while my car was being shipped to aus. (see here: )
The KE was bog standard with 185.000 km on the clock.
the 5k was fairly gutless and the trans was 3 speed auto which just didn't help at all.
So i decided to change to 4age, T50, add an LSD and fix up the suspension and brakes. Here are some pics of how I did it, I tried to keep it pretty standard looking on the outside. Also I didnt want to have too harsh a ride or be too loud because it is meant as a daily. Basically I was going for 'sleeper'
the ke when i first bought it.
Someone smashed my wing mirror... grr
Removing the 5k

Hyundai excel radiator went in, I used the orginal Hyundai mounts both top and bottom. Also had to cut the body around where the ke radiator mounts because it interfered with the excel radiator.
AE82 oil cooler
AE86 washer bottle required a mount to be made for the rear bolt hole but basically fits in the same place as on the 86
Used a VN commie airbox and relocated the ke radiator overflow bottle.
To be replaced with this.
Quite proud of the fact that i pulled this motor from a self serve wrecker, complete with loom and computer for $250
This is the cooling system i set up using an ae82 external thermostat. Thermo mounts off a bracket connecting to the engine mount.
Also I bent and re-drilled the fwd manifold supprt rod to suit the ae86 inlet manifold.

Fuel system
Surge tank in boot
Lines to surge tank, I bent up some bundy tube myself and then took it to a brake place to put some flares.
Making some holes for the AE71 manual pedal box that also came from the wrecker...

you need to widen the hole for the shifter if you want to go from AT to MT
clutch line with banjo fitting. I used an ae86 line and bent it around slightly to suit.
battery in the boot with 100A breaker (about $50 from jaycar if i remember correctly) 100A is actually a bit low but i only tripped it once when i was cranking the engine for ages trying to diagnose a wiring problem.
Not a ppretty photo.
what i did was strip the ae82 harness and install it to the engine as required. i also took the chance to remove any unused wires. Some lengthening and re-routing was required but it wasnt too bad.
Computer mounted here. I used the ae82 bracket and just cut it up and bent it around to fit this position.
Note that you can't put it here if you run aircon as the condenser interferes tith the comp.
suspension, front coilovers.
cut & shut ra40 struts. removed about 40mm in length of the strut
st185 KYB adjustable inserts 20mm spacer was required
standard upper supports used
sleeve and spring support are t3 but i'm not too sure about the quality of the aluminium sleeve. Might switch to a steel one in the future.
How it sits now on 14" rays meshies, tyres are 185/65R14

This is the coolest ke70 I've seen. Best interior, whole car's simple and on point.
Thanks guys, I was trying to make a clean daily that still kept the feeling of the KE. Thats why I kept the stock seats and clock dash etc.
The 4ag pulls really well, especially since i changed to the 4.3 ring. Rips pretty good skids with the lsd and manages to get some surprised faces as it looks fairly standard from the outside.
When i get back to aus the first thing i'll do is ditch the RA40 brakes, probably for some MA61 units that i have waiting. The RA40 ones are pwerful enough for the street but the feeling through the pedal is rubbish. I think it's because of the way the caliper slides in the bracket, it doesnt use slider pins like more recent calipers, it uses a bushing in the bracket that I think would add a lot of friction.
ship it to japan.
This thing is super clean! Motivated to get mine to a similar level..
