Default Steering column has play. What do?

Own a ae71, and the steering column has play. I'm talking more in and out movement from the drivers seat then side to side, it has new rack and tie rod ends, wheel bearings etc already.

Is there some variety of bush somewhere? Uni joint screwed? It's certainly liveable, it's just a quality of life thing for when it gets rego.

Possibly the uni joint is worn on the end of the shaft, or something as silly as the bolts holding the column up not being tight enough and it's just moving down the slots? Or the main dash support being loose?

Mmm, I actually checked the bolts on the column, might be the main dash support though or more likely something is worn. That said I swear every bolt on the entire car was loose when I got it, so that may be it. Its in for a roadworthy atm so pending failure I will pull apart the dash and have a look lol.

Play in the steering is something you'd want to sort out pretty quickly.

So its just this and reverse lights I need for rego (stoked, although theres no wiring for the lights near the switch? a pain but anyway).

Mechanic took a look, apparently its a bush on the interior over the outside of the shaft? Also no longer stocked. Had a look at a few diagrams couldnt really figure it out. Anyone experienced this issue/ is there anything aftermarket available or should I just go pull one from the wreckers. I seem to remember reading about something the same deal as an issue for drifting s13s, and a cnc'd alloy part being a replacement

If you can measure it and get some sizes I will most likely have a brass bush that will do the trick.

So I found a complete (toyota from the looks of it) ae86 service manual online, couldnt find a *e7* one.

Now I'm just confused. Thrust stopper? Figure I'm just going to just have to pull it apart.

All sorted, just went to kelly wrecking and pulled a ke70 steering column. It was the (completly missing) thrust stopper which apparently is just what the bearing sits in, and is just a bit of plastic. Odd. If I ever do this again il take up an offer of brass bushes, because they seem like they would be much more effective. Kinda looks like its meant to fold in an accident though, along with the column itself.

Anyway, it looked like this. No wonder I had play.

The thrust stopper is adjustable to sort out the end float I thought, try adjusting that, I was able to tighten up a really sloppy column with it without changing any bearings on my ae71.
