Default cam pulley timing marks won't line up?

Ok guys just in the midst of putting my motor back together (4age smallport) Just installed the camshafts (stock) as per the manual and the timing marks on the pulleys don't line up with the backing plate.... they are a tooth or so out..

Can I manually turn the cams by hand to get them in the right spot (is this a bad idea?)

I haven't got a timing belt on yet so they are going the spin independent to the crank obviously...

    Need a little help..

    Cheers

You will be fine to adjust the cam by hand (re spanner) to get it that little bit further.

Just make sure that you have the pulley on using the correct dowel hole (depending on intake or exhaust), as some 4ages have two ways the pulley will go on. Causing the timing to be correct, or way off.

on a side not to this, after I got all the engine in and running (having other issues I won't go into) and timing is in need of adjustment... anyhow with my cam pulleys I wasn't able to get them to line up exactly the top marks line up with the backing plate but the two marks that face each other on the pulleys are slightly off the exhaust pulley is about a tooth higher then the intake???

It would not line up no matter what, how much is this going to affect the running of the motor? and any thoughts as too why they don't match up like they should?

Make sure your crank timing pulley mark lines up with the mark on the oil pump, it's a little raised dot. Then move the cam gears so that align with the backing plate and carefully put the belt on. It should only be able to line up when all three are correct.

The crank keyway should also be at 12 o'clock

yeah timing pulley is aligned with mark on oil pump, cam gears are aligned with the marks on the backing plate, just the the two marks facing each other are slightly off?

Crank pulley mark notch sits at at 5 after TDC on the pulley covers, keyway faces up (I'm fairly sure)

Dizzy was installed correctly I believe but car would not run at all like this, and had to pull it out and rotate it a shitload to get it to fire and run (while trying different positions on the dizzy I got some bad sounds on one attempt at starting (valve piston collision?) anyhow it ran in the end, just stumped on why the gears dont line up exactly as they should...

Block was faced and head decked 10 thou, trd .8mm HG used but with 9:4.1 pistons (bigport)

What two marks? The only thing that you need to worry about are that the dimples in the cam gears line up with the embossed vertical lines on the back cover. The cam knock pin on the intake should face somewhat up and somewhat down and offset right for the exhaust. The cam lobes should face away from each other.

I'm not trying to have a go at you either so please don't take this as a serve, I just want to help.

10thou off the head with a .8mm HG won't be an interference motor so don't worry, especially with low comp pistons.

The dizzy is a total prick to get in, once you do it a few times it gets easier, but make sure it's set right. Take the cam cover off if it helps.
