    Default VIC : RWC questions.

    Hey all,
I know there have been posts on this kinda thing but I have a few individual questions

Car is a ADM AE86 fresh converted 4age of ae82 standard minus tomnie fuel regulator. Brought car that was registered in SA with 4AC but vic roads wanted to inspect it before they would renew rego anyways so just did the change to 4age.

    1. Does the exhaust have to have Cat converter?

    2. Does it have to have a full airbox or can I get away with a pod mounted to the chassis?

    3. Have coilovers waiting to be put in : ), Do they need to be engineered?

    4. Is the fuel reg going to be an isuue with inspection?

Your exhaust will technically need a cat to be roadworthy, but depends on who's doing it and if it goes over the pits when you take it to Vicroads or not. Again technically you will need an airbox of some sort, just has to look factory. VN commodore ones can work quite well. Coilovers do need to be engineered to be legal. Your fuel reg won't necessarily be an issue for the RWC itself, they might not be keen on it.

Really depends on who is doing the RWC, as I personally wouldn't pass any of those things.

well now I know I will attempt to meet all those things but the reg will stay for now , not hard to put the old one back on.

As far as im aware is exempt from needing a cat if built b4 '86 or '87
Mines an '84 and I've been told by vic roads and my mechanic that it will definitely not need one.

That's where it's a mess, the car doesn't qualify for a cat, but the engine prolly does haha..

Fair enough... but once again if the ae82 was built before '86/'87 then the rule should still apply right?

i've heard it has to have a cat if it was made after aug 1983.
legally if the engine had a cat in whatever car it was originally in you have to have the same emissions standard it had when new.
its my belief thats the only ground you can get shafted on for running a 20v in a ae86 in vic.
i got a 200cel metalcat, made no performance loss and if i ever get pulled over there isnt anything i can get done for. havent got the time or money to waste arguing out of fines and i can save a couple of dolphins while im at it

Geoff is right, emissions changed after August 1983 and any car running EFI after this date will have to stick to the emissions standards of the time. With engine conversions you have to stick to the emissions standards for the year of the engine, not the car. 1986 is when the noise limit changes for EPA from 96db to 90db, not to be confused with tailpipe emissions but this noise limit also applies to conversions. The EPA would have a field day with your fuel reg too, I would suggest you hide it as selling the car to pay an emmisions related fine isn't worth the wank factor of having something flashy in the bay.

BTW Vicroads has nothing to do with pollution or emissions, and to be honest most of their staff have NFI what they're talking about so I can see why they would say it's fine.
