Default 4agze piston part number difference

    Hey dudes

I need to get some new pistons for my ae101 gze. I've found the listing on toyo DIY but it lists 3 standard types of piston and a .5mm oversize. I need standard size so I'm not sure which one to order.

And while we are at it, has anyone got connections for a good price? Local Toyota in tweed heads south NSW quoted $130 with a trade discount.

    Here's the toyo DIY link

    Cheers

was this as a result of the oil blow by? what ended up being the culprit?

Yeah Johl. This was the blow by cause. The culprit, I'm not entirely sure, too much boost? Basically it detonated quite badly and pushed the ring land down so the top ring gap is enlarged and the middle ring gap is now too tight. Happened on all 4, so it's time for new pistons. Luckily the block, bearings etc are still good.

Im sure there is a number stamped on the top of the pistons........1, 2 or 3. I remember seeing them when I rebuilt my ZE.

This may correspond with the listing on Toyo DIY.

While I have no direct experience with Toyota pistons, KTM do 3 "standard" size pistons, with a 0.01mm step in diameter between them. So you can order a nominally 101mm piston in 100.96, 100.97 and 100.98. May be a similar system with the Toyota piston listings and it's a matter of checking your bores and seeing which would suit best.

Hen is correct. Standard 4age/ze pistons come in three 'mark' specs to account for manufacturing tolerances of the block.

I bought pistons online from Lithia toyota in the USA, pretty decent price although shipping adds a bit. End cost was basically the same as the gze piston+ring kits available on ebay and took 7 weeks to arrive...
There's also amayama.com which may be able to get some and can be very cheap.

If I was doing things again I wouldn't get factory gze pistons as CP piston+ring kits can be had for hardly any more and although the factory pistons are pretty damn good the extra $150 or so is a drop in the ocean of the final cost of my engine...

Speaking of - buying a set of Spool or MRP rods is not much more than paying someone to shot peen and prep stock ze rods! Note though that they are shipped un-sized - you get rods and piston pins matched together for perfect tolerances. Glad I went that route.

I've got a set of pretty low-mileage 101 gze pistons left over from my build if you're interested. one has a bit of pitting in the top (as if something hard dropped into the chamber) which is why I decided not to use them since I was doing a full rebuild.

Thanks for the advice. One issue that I have is that the engine was recently rebuild so it will be piston/ring replacement only and the bore is still 81mm. Most aftermarket pistons come in 82mm or 81.5 as the smallest bore size so Toyota seems like the way to go.

I tried Toyota Australia and they want $130 each with a 4 week wait (coming from Japan). So I emailed Jesse Streeter to see what he could do and apparently the Toyota he spoke to is out of stock and not sure when they will be getting more

So I'm back to ordering locally, anyone work at Toyota? I hate retail prices.
