Mitutoyo 150mm digital.
I wouldn't use anything else.
Except for 200 mm.
You get what you pay for.
All about the purpose. If you are just checking bolt sizes you get away with cheaper makes.

I agree with Slimer86, if its not going to be well looked after & close enough is good enough as far as measurements go then maybe look at something else, Mitutoyo are not the cheapest but certainly one of the best out there, its going to cost you around $250 for a New Digital one ... I even heard recently that Aldi had some No Name Brand Digital ones for sale for around $50 or so, possibly not there Now ?? ..

I use these for all my work:
I am going to make another order to this company soon, I can add this to it and you pick it up from my house?
One advantage of these is they take a 2032 coin cell which holds power for ages over those shitty LR44 button cells.

All the generic cheap ones I've used seem to work pretty well. I doubt any expensive one has a noticeable improvement in precision. That's what micrometers are for.
The difference I have found is in the slop/rigidity. If for example you press the jaws closed to measure a pipe, the harder you press on the cheaper models the smaller the measurement will be. The expensive models are meant to be made of a finer tolerance and more rigid design to reduce this, it does make a considerable difference. To counteract this I press on the arms themselves with my fingers directly outside the contact points and wobble it to find a true position. Doing this it negates the problem to a high degree but it's still not as accurate.

I've used some cheap set (Jaycar maybe) for over 10 years. They do the job fine for all car related stuff. If I need to make a shaft for a press fit then I'd look at something a bit better though.
Personally I prefer calipers with dial gauges. The batteries never go flat, zeroing isn't nearly as much of an issue and paralax isn't as much of a problem as vernier calipers.
