Default ae92 gti - fuel pump doesn't prime when key @ on

ok guys I think my last small issue I need to sort after rebuilding my smallport (ae92 gti) and finally getting it running (3rd time lucky) yesterday.
Ive noticed the fuel pump doesn't prime when the key is switched to on... After driving around a fair bit yesterday car was running great. I went to start it this morning only to have a backfire while cranking that blew my intake pipe apart along with not wanting to fire. I persisted and gave it a few more goes and it decided it wanted to run again.

It does make me think it is to do with the pump not priming (brand new pump also) you can hear it run while the engine is running and the car runs fine..
I have swapped out the COR with another which made no difference...

What else and where should I be looking to resolve this...

Brett * Haveaparty* if you feel like been a guru and coming round on arvo to take a peek that would be sick *_~

They aren't meant to prime on ignition. Only the bigports do that. Check your cam timing hasn't skipped a tooth

hmm ok that's interesting just seems like it takes it a second or 2 before it will fire (sounds like your out of fuel for a second or so basically) then starts and runs fine, don't think its skipped a tooth as surely that would be quite noticeable when reving it out which still feels the same

Check you have all earths reconnected and tight then. Should be one from the passenger side near the engine mount, one from the batt to gearbox etc

    How strong is your spark?

earths are good, Ive even added a 3 additional earths since re install.. Haven't checked spark mainly because it runs hard all the way to redline so no reason to think its an issue..

Are you still having the same problem?

I'd also check the vac line off the fuel pressure reg to see if there is fuel in it and the condition of the injector seals. When it finally does start is there a puff of smoke out the rear? If you could take a video it might be easier to diagnose. And does the check engine light come on when it backfired?

I know my posts haven't been overly helpful, but hopefully they will eliminate the obvious things.

It hasn't done it again so I'm not fretting over it.. I was also thinking the fpr could be a cause or possibly the ignition contacts been worn and not sending 12v to the coil when initial crank happens... no smoke that I noticed although wasn't looking at the time, didn't notice the check light either...
