    Default T-series LSD binding up??

    Hey doods!
having a bit of trouble with my diff.
its in an ae86 that i bought and i was told by the seller that it has a 10 bolt LSD in it.. which i know it didnt come with from the factory and i havent pulled it apart to actually have a look.
problem is it binds up on one side when i turning at lowish speeds. kinda feels like its locked. also has a pretty horrible whine when i am accelerating at a certain point (which is usually the point of throttle that just maintains my speed and is very loud and annoying). i went and found a back road with my mate and did some test skids to see if it was spinning both wheels and it did so we were sort of thinking it is an LSD. But i cant quite figure out why its binding up.. could it be the clutches in the diff?? or that its just fucked and needs a rebuild??? or something else??

    any help is much appreciated.

    Lachie.

Sounds like it's a very harsh LSD, as they can be set up pretty aggressively and be pretty close to a full locker. I have no idea what they mean by 10 bolt, as that's generally a GM thing (10/12 bolt etc). I would check the oil level first and if it isn't fresh change it for the whine, then if that doesn't work your most likely looking at worn gears. If they're worn out they generally slip, not lock up more so I doubt it's a wear thing on the centre.

...Or they could just be a liar and it's a shitty welded diff.

Jimmee is spot on - either an aggressive LSD or its the other LSD (Locked Standard Diff) haha

Some LSD's can be a bit clunky/bind up if the wrong oil is being used. I run Synthetic Castrol 85/140 in my TRD 2 way and it doesn't hop or bind at all

When lachie says 10 bolt he means a T series opposed to an 8 bolt S series.

Its definitely is a lsd as it doesn't drive the inside wheel/skip without any power input. I think its either a quite harsh LSD setup that may be a touch low on oil ( axle seal is leaking) but I also think the trailing arm bushes are fucked making it seem a lot more severe then it is.

Do a search for "LSD friction modifier additive", you may find it is possible to make your diff less aggressive.
Diffs don't whine so it is either the final drive, its bearings or a wheel bearing. If you are lucky it might just be low on oil !

I find T series usually whine after a good thrashing. Some of mine have lasted years like that. The noise sucks, but I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Change the oil and see if it helps things. Also you could consider running the LSD in. This involves driving in figure eights and having the clutch in while you're on the curvy bits (only give it power with the wheel straight). I'm sure there's a proper explanation out there, google will find it. This seemed to help with my LSDs.

If you still find it a pain you can always get the centre readjusted, have the LSD rebuilt and/or get a new ring and pinion, but all that costs money.

EDIT - Googled that for you. End of first post -
