Hey guys,

Im in rather a pickle... I think my AE101 4agze (manual) ECU has given up, and before I start forking out some serious (well I think serious) coin on a replacement, I was hoping to try another...

(I would also like to know if there are any good ZE mechanics near me in Moorabbin/Cheltenham area?)

What makes u certain it is the ecu that is faulty? I have a couple of gze ecus, but not sure if they are ae92 or 101.

What is the number on your ecu?

Hey Matt,

Yeah ive gone through the normal checks, and have come to a wall.

I had a hunting problem to begin with, which would come on when it was warm. It has progressed to the point that it now does it when you start the car.

Ive tried looking for vac leaks, ive bleed the coolant, checked and cleaned up the waxstat, changed the thermostat and changed the temp sensor....

What got me to thinking its the ECU is now (where before I could) I cant pull diagnostic codes from the ECU. It just maintains constant 'Check Engine Light' on.

Any ideas?

ALSO.... It wont boost, its very boggy when in this state (Limp mode?) and acceleration is very poor.

This was when it was letting it warm up before the problem arose, and could be driven... Im now catching the bus.

Pull negative terminal off battery for ten seconds to reset ecu.
See if the problem goes away.
Kind of sounds dodgy knock sensor related if you have previously driven it without issues.
Any diagnostic codes?
Bridge terminals te1 and e1 together in the diagnostic box to give us any fault code from your check engine light. Recommend doing this before performing the ecu reset.

Does the check engine light actually come on? Or just flashes when u are trying to enter into diag mode

Ok so when I was pulling codes it was saying 02 sensor constantly after driving, this was before the problem was happening effective immediately after start. Now it will only display check engine light constantly, no flashes, always on when in diagnostic mode (ie: bridging connector) getting no codes.

I checked inside the ECU, its pretty clean, i couldn't notice any bulging caps or leakage... Maybe I should take a pic and post it. Ive also heard the 20v ECU's were prone to this but GZE not so much....

So... on a side note, today our trusty AE112 corolla family car started playing up... of all times... but I dont care, 86 comes first!

Not being able to pull diagnostic codes is the first sign of leaky capacitors in the ecu. Rip the covers off it and have a look for fluid leaking on he board.

Also check continuity between the diag pins and the ecu. Quite often on conversions they get cut by mistake.

Ok so I have opened up the ECU and had a better look... Fried/leaking caps. I tried uploading a pic but i can get it small enough... man im useless. So I guess a trip to Jaycar to flick a dude $50 to repair... hopefully.

so no luck after getting the ECU back. Is there any chance this could be fuel related? Thinking of checking fuel pressure + fuel pump voltage. The problem is there are no real issues coming up on the diagnostic..... Also... Still looking for a good knowledgeable 4age/4agze mechanic in Melbourne.
