Default Wiring Questions on 20v conversion

    Hey All

ive got a few wiring questions.

    1. Trueno headlights - i was wondering if anyone has wired up these headlights? I need some advice on it. I have an Adm sprinter. Should I use the original loom? Or run new wiring?

    2. My tacho doesn't work. I'm guessing it hasn't been wired up properly. How do I check this one?

    3. Fuel gauge. I'm guessing nothing special needs to be done here. Should work as stock. Please confirm.

Anyone know now any good auto electricians in Sydney that know these cars?

    1. Most people use the trueno looms as they already have the relays and wires you need.

    2. There is a tacho mod which involves changing some parts on the tacho circuit. Just google ae86 tacho mod.

    3. Yep, nothing changes on this front really. Just troubleshoot as normal.

You can splice in relays etc for the trueno lights to pop up, or just run some separate lines and have them come up on a toggle switch.

Another thing I have discovered with this car. I've only recently bought it. There are a bunch of things that are being powered off the alternator. The battery has been relocated to the boot. Power goes to the starter motor and then another bunch of wires go to alternator. I notice there are things that are being powered off the alternator. This is probably an easy way to get to the battery power since it's on the boot. Is this a good way to do wiring? Seems like a shortcut to me.

Most cars share a wire to the starter and alternator... It is a shortcut, but not uncommon to do that. I didn't need a tacho mod in ae86 with a 20v stock ecu, it just ran perfectly off the black ignitor pin.

What ecu is the car running? You may need the tacho booster as suggested already if adaptronic or other similar one.

Thanks. The car is running a Microtech which is yet to be tuned.

Ive ve only just opened up the under dash and looked at the wiring. Looks like the wipers have wired up to a seperate switch rather than the standard. I'll have to slowly go through it all and see what has been done. Problem is some if the old wiring may have been cut or removed. If like to make it as stock as possible so it may be a good idea to pull it out and start with a new harness.

Any ae86 wiring experts in Sydney? I wouldn't mind getting some advice.

I've wired up allot of different engine conversions into cars etc...

The wipers would be seperated from the engine loom as they plug into jdm engine harnesses to get through the firewall , so that is why they would appear to be wired seperately especially if you have an aftermarket ecu. What is the main issue ? Is it the asthetics or u just don't get how it works?

My logic when it comes to wiring, is that if it doesn't cause you any grief leave it alone, cos generally once you tie it all up in a loom, it will look neat regardless.

Thanks. Sounds like you are definitely the right person to talk to.

Im a bit of a perfectionist so what I see might be acceptable. I just want to ensure things are done correctly.

Here are my things at the moment
    1. Wipers - a completely independent switch has been wired up to turn them on. It does not use the original switch.
    2. New wiring has been run for headlights. This seems to be powered from the alternator. There is a power fuse running inline after the alternator to a relay. Not the best looking. Original wiring is currently still there. Would prefer if original wiring was used.
    3. Horn, Speedo and tachometer doesn't work. This just needs to be fixed.
    4. A couple of other power wires are running off the alternator. Not sure what it is yet. This also has fuses inline. Not a good look.
    5. Hazard lights don't work. Found a wire connected to the loom for some reason. It made a buzzing noise when switched on. I removed the wire and the sound no longer happens. Hazards still don't work. Not sure what the wire is. Need more investigation.
    6. I don't think fan etc works. Just needs to be fixed.

I'll be sending it to JEM to do a tune in the coming weeks and this might expose some further wiring issues with the EMS. cross my fingers that there isn't anything.

I just want things to work like they are supposed to. Car seems to be built for track so previous owner didn't really care. I want it for road and track hence I need things to work.

I guess the first thing to work out is if you have a dash loom in the car.. If the headlights / hazards and cluster doesn't work it wouldn't be unusual to find a custom loom as such with switches for the wipers etc.

Taking power from the alternator whilst looks bad, isn't as dodgey as it sounds. Where is the battery located?
