Shipping generally kills good deals on exhausts due to the size, and there are plenty of local fabricators that can make exhausts that are just as good as anywhere else in the world.

Shipping is definitely the killer. But for online stores, I always use perfectrun.jp
Their prices are fair, and almost always less than retail. And their service is second to none. Prompt replies and prompt shipping.

They can get any part you need, even if it's not listed in their catalogue. Just email them with the manufacturer details and part number, then they'll reply you with a quote. If you're happy with the quote, use their special order page to place the order.

IMO you are better off to purchase a decent set of headers and then go to the local exhaust shop.

i've bought a exhaust through nengun before, no issues but hiyashi's recommendation would be worth a shot if your after a particular exhaust.
that being said though, a skilled local exhaust shop will make you a great exhaust

I've been looking at the Kakimoto exhausts around the place, perfectrun, Jesse Streeter etc. They seem to have a landed price of around $1000.

I've got very little experience in terms of custom exhausts fabrication, so would $1000 get me a decent 2 1/4" stainless system - or would it be significantly, more less that $1000?

    Appreciate all the help.

Considering I had a mandrel bent over diff 2.5" stainless cat-back made for $400 and it was really nicely made, $1000 would get you something pretty excellent. The main killer is labour time, if they can do a good job while working fast then it's obviously going to be cheaper.
