    Default 4AGE Intake Piping Questions

    Hi guys,

Couple of questions about the 4age redtop smallport intake piping and airbox.

So basically the plastic/rubber under the right hand green arrow on my 4age has perished and ripped, and of course this is creating a massive vaccume leak and causing unfiltered hot air to enter the engine. Because of this I've been looking into possibly replacing the whole setup with a cold air intake. My questions are:

Are these intake hoses (green arrows) for this engine hard to find, and where should I look?
What on earth is the thing off to the side of this pipe (red rectangle)?
What do each of the two sensors attached to the airbox do (blue and grey arrows)?
How much louder should I expect the engine to be if I do replace the airbox setup with a cold air intake?

    Thanks guys

I can't help with all the questions, but the red boxed item looks like it's probably a damper. It smooths out any intake pulses and probably makes the car a little smoother to drive. Not a great loss if you can't keep it, probably good to have if you can. I'm not sure what both the sensors are, but at least one of them is the intake air temperature sensor. The ECU needs this, so you'll have to figure out how to keep it. Unless you're planning to go into modding the car, I'd be talking to toyota or scouring wreckers for a reasonable condition replacement hose.

Thank you! I'm not really interested in modding the car, the cold air intake would probably give a negligible power increase over simply fixing the broken hose. If I can't find a replacement hose I'll have to though. I might post a thread in the wanted forum and give a few wreckers a call.

    What state are you in?
Resonator boxes are there to lower intake noise, ditch it.
You can buy a multitude of different diameter intake pipes, fittings and silicone joiners from most automotive chains aswell if your keen to make a cold air intake. Fitting a pod filter will increase intake noise but not to a level I would call loud. You may find low down torque lacking but top end increased

I'm in SA. I'm currently on the lookout for the stock pipe as if I can get one for cheap then I'd happy with that for now. Having said that, I have been looking at this K&N cold air intake: . Any word on if that's any good? From what I understand after a bit more research is that the two sensors on the stock airbox are a vaccume sensor and an air sensor, and this K&N kit has a place to install the air sensor in it. The problem is it looks like the vaccume sensor will be lost so I could have trouble getting it to idle well when it's cold. Any recommendations as to places I could buy these intake pipes etc. at in SA? Thanks

Dont remove the airbox. I used to have one of these and I have been through the process of getting it to idle properly.

You NEED to retain all those pipes and the box with the blue arrow. Its for cold start and A/C idle up too.

What you need to do is fit a decent panel filter in the stock airbox, then in the LHF guard remove the HUGE resonator box. You will then see a pipe that leads through the panel upto the airbox. You can join a pipe onto that and run it down to the bottom of the front bumper.

Ok thanks. I'll need to replace the intake pipe between the airbox and the throttle body because as I said it's completely snapped and leaking in air like nothing else. Just confirming, that red rectangled object the picture I put is the resonator box? On my car at least it looks like there is no resonator box near the LHF guard, it's just a little pipe that sucks in air from near the LHF headlight that goes straight to the airbox, I think. If so could I just replace the hose from the throttle body to the airbox with a hose piece from an automotive store and remove the resonator box from the system entirely? According to the wreckers I called that particular pipe (green arrows) always breaks in these cars and of course toyota charge a pretty penny for it. Also, is removing the resonator likely to cause the engine to "rumble" more on its mounts? What I mean is currently from within the cabin the engine feels like it's hardly even there which is really nice. I couldn't care less about making the car a little bit louder, especially on the intake as it sounds really nice, but I do like having the car "feel" smooth. Thanks for all your help guys!

Have a look at that pipe that runs from the headlight to the airbox. Half way along it branches DOWN and goes through the body sheet metal onto a big resonator box that sits inside the LHF guard behind the plastic cover.

Yeah just get a piece of pipe of that diameter and do away with the small resonator box.

It wont affect vibration in the car, just increase the induction noise slightly.

So there are two resonator boxes, the small one by the throttle body and the large one in the guard?

At this point it's sounding like:

Piece of pipe from near lights -> Airbox with nice new panel filter and sensors all connected -> piece of pipe -> throttle body

I think that's a good mix between ease, expense and sound while keeping all the sensors intact so I don't have to worry about the idle issues.

Also, I don't suppose you know what diameter I'll need?

    Thanks again for your help!
