New Kid on the block

Hey everybody. Just wanted to say hi and kinda put my name out there. I just bought my first "AE86" coupe and it sure needs alot of work. I will probably be asking a ton of questions for I don't know alot of extensive information about these....so be prepared lol. Anyways the idea for the build is to just have fun with it, and eventually make it into a nice period track car. The interior is already gutted and is bare bones, I have all the pieces which is nice. But for now I'm about to focus on rebuilding the engine. It's a 4age big port out of an MR2 (I'm pretty sure), and I would like to convert it to carbs. Ive got to bore the block out because of rust pitting so any advice on a general build to actually have fun with carbs would be appreciated. I've built some push rod v8s before but this will be my first DOHC. Anyways nice to meet you all and see you around.

They are a simple motor you should find pretty easy to assemble. Carbs sound awesome but can be painful to balance and tune. For the set and forget reason most people stick with the injection which isn't all that difficult to wire up once you break it down.

Yeah, in taking it apart, I couldn't believe how well everything is labeled from factory. That is good to know, and something I will definitely take into account especially if I want to be driving it by this winter. Set and forget would probably be the way to go for me. Ill post pictures as I go along. Yay slow because college budget.....

Your build is basically how mine started - check it out.

Also started with a stuffed engine that'll eventually be running carbs. I spoke to a few tuners beforehand, basically choose your cams and what you want to achieve. They'll act as the heart of your engine.
No good running 10,000rpm cams with 40mm carbs and all stock internals.

Thanks Jrad, it will be a long project for sure. I was looking into it a little last night and am probably going to go with the common 256 cams or stockers till i can afford to build her up a little, and have the engine bored over .5mm for a rebuild kit I'm looking at (thats still safe I'd assume? not many people talk about boring it over unless it is a race engine). I don't expect anything too crazy, but this will be much more fun that driving my tired old truck around.
