    Default What spring rate..??

I have had a search and found a bit of info but I just wanted to double-check what peoples opinions are before I order my sleeve kit.

The car is a ke70 with 86 struts and I'm trying to figure out what front coilover spring rate would best suit me?
It's a daily driver and I don't mind a bit of stiffness but then again I don't want it way too stiff for driving around.

It will also be seeing a fair few drift practises some time soon hopefully so I want it up to the job.

I'm thinking a 7kg or 8kg spring would be good?? Any opinions? I'm not looking to get a very expensive shock insert aswell so I'm sure that is a factor too?

i ran 7kg in my old car with coilovers and KYB AGX shocks and it was perfect for the street. wasnt as harsh as 8kg but not to soft like 6's. if you were using the car for more grip than drift i would say go softer but if your gonna be street and tracking your car then id deffinetly say 7kg

Thanks for the info mate, I've currently got ajps 8kg springs on the car now with standard shocks and I'm not sure how much of a difference there will be with the new coilovers with new shocks? In terms of stiffness?

Right now the front end seems a little bouncy which I'm guessing is due to having standard old 86 shocks in there?

Can anyone recommend me a CHEAP shock ineserts to go with this kit?

I plan on running the car a few inches lower than it is right now but not overly low if that makes a difference in shock choice?

And yeh Dave I've got a sr in mine so would that mean to go for a bit softer spring or harder than normal?

General rule of thumb from what you read on the internet:

    6kg/mm front, 4kg/mm rear
A sweet setup for a mildly modifyed car driven in the hills and some track days, with new shocks.

    7kg/mm front, 5kg/mm rear
A sweet setup with adjustable front shocks (stiffer than stock).

    8kg/mm front, 6kg/mm rear
A drift setup, a little too hard for the street. You must have adjustable shocks in good condition.

Hmm going by those rules then I should be getting 7kg, not 8kg..? Would having the sr20 instead of the usual 4a make much of a difference in choice?

Yeh good point, I'll see how the 8kg's go and if they are too stiff for me then I'll drop it down a bit.

i'm running 8kg up front and chop falcons out back with excel g shocks (yeah i couldnt afford any better at the time) and its a little too bouncy in the hills. nothing too bad on streets most of the time though.
if i could buy some again ill probably get agx shocks up front or go softer spring.

Are your fronts coilovers or standard 86 struts? And what front shocks are you using?

I agree with Jonny. I have tried almost every combination and i feel that the 7kg/mm front and 5 kg/mm is the best alround combination. I have this in my road AE86 and my track/club car.
