check the vicroads website. they have a very long and boringly detailed legal document for you to read.

basically as long as its behind the drivers compartment you can do what you like, as long as you take out the seats, and mount it to a secure part of the car and not the middle of somewhere random...

BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU WONT GET DEFECTED. cops can defect you for whatever they want and its up to you to prove to them its legal.

It may also pay to have a chat to some people/workshops involved in rallying. All rally cars (well the vast majority) need to have road reg, and they have cages. You may be able to get an inside line on what'll fly or interesting interperations of the rules.

dont they get a special rego though? like they get a classics rego or something that allows them to drive while competing between stages etc, but not a regular drive around daily rego?

I believe that the rally class cars have a special registration available to them that allows a very comprehensive cage including double side intrusion beams and diagonals overhead, neither of which are able to get by the vic roads regs.

If the cage whether it be half or full, complies the vic roads regs, then engineers certificate is not required.

Top level rally cars have some special reg (and old ones can get club reg), but most club cars are on normal road plates. Just an option to get some more info and opinions, though as stated above, the Vicroads info is the place to start.
