    Default 20v cam timing

    ok story goes like so....

On my 20v I removed the timing belt quite some time ago, without even thinking about the timing etc, since then I have manually spun the crank a few times without the belt attached so the cams have not rotated with the crank...

Now I have no idea where the cams are meant to sit while the crank is at TDC? The only thing I can add upon this is the timing markers on the cam pulleys are at roughly 1 o-clock & 11 o-clock (inlet/exhaust)\

    Where should they be?
Cam they be spun without moving the crank? or will this cause damage?

    Any help appreciated...

    Cheers
    Niz

Do you have a shop manual? Go find one if you don't, they're on the internets.

    AT TDC (not BTDC),

Each cam pulley has 2 marks. When at TDC, the intake cam should have one mark matching the mark on the top of the cam cover, and one mark pointing at the exhaust cam.

The exhaust cam should have one mark pointing right at the mark on the intake cam, and one mark pointing at the notch on the top of the cam cover. Both should match up pefectly, the crank should be at TDC. Then you try to put the timing belt on as best you can.

Just know that you shouldn't turn the crank separately from the cams in the future....on interference motors that's a no-no.

TDC that's it, I wasn't sure when I was typing the first post. (mental block)

Cheers for clearing that up, makes sense now I think, I can see the the marks on the pulleys, the inlet actually looks as though it has 3 for some reason though?

I will have to wait until I get my cam cover back so I can check against the marks on it before going any further....

no doubt something else will stump me... until then,

    cheers for the help

On this site there is Blacktop Manual.

Its what I used when assembling GZE block and Silvertop Head. Goto Engine Mechanical - Timing belt installation, ignore the tensioner if you have ST because the BT is hydraulic. It shows you the crank pulley mark and cam pulley mark allignment.
