Just get under the car and check all the steering components.

    well there arent exactly alot.

assuming your ball joints are not stuffed (check these first like marvis sais)

    then its your rack.

when i first got my ke70 mine was the other way, some fool had done it up so damn tight, that the road-worthy guy picked it up straight away.

i ended up just getting a whole new rack from the wreckers for like $40, as i think adjusting the backlash on the rack isnt as easy as winding it up till its "tight".

im just reading through the manual for ae86 (a steering rack is a rack)

it lists the following under "excessive play"

    -front wheel bearing worn
-main shaft yoke or intermediate shaft yoke warn
    -lower arm ball joints worn
    -sterring system joints warn
    -steering gear out of adjustment

in the maunal there appears to be something called "pinion adjusting screw" which is farily deep inside the rack (gota take off a few parts) it is given a specific torque (in the case of ae86 its 3.2in/lb) which your gonna need a pretty damn small torque wrench to adjust it with.

after reading more it seems that almost all the bolts that hold the pinion gear in have a very specific torque.

id say take it somewhere to get rebuilt/setup so you can forget about it, or just go to the wreckers and get another one! you can test them out at the wreckers too, so you dont get a dud.

btw if you have the 98mb ae86 manual (if not find it on google) then its on page 173 or so.
