out of curiosity, did you compression test it? What exactly are the problems? How long was it sitting for before you bought it?
Yep, that's what I've decided on.

The engine was sold to me as coming out of a running car, already RWD converted, new water pump and lightweight flywheel. At the time of payment everything was sweet.
I paid for it in late December 2012, and it was to be shipped from NSW to me in VIC, but that didn't happen. My old man and I drove up in April 2013 and personally picked it up - the seller in hiding. The engine was left on a crane in his driveway.
The seller is an absolute dog and I have nothing positive to say about him. But I know I'm never going to get anything in return and I'm not a person to seek retribution.
All I'll say is never buy anything major unless you can do it in person - and I've done a lot more to cover my ass in major transactions from there on in.

The problems on visual inspection are surface rust on the crank, very lightly on the bores, 2 valves jammed open (not able to move at all) rust on the cams.
It appears it'd had a blown head-gasket, however the gasket itself is in good condition. Which suggest it's actually a problem with the head itself.
I know it had been sitting since April until now, but we've kept oil in it and turned it over. But the internal damage suggests that it was off the road for a lot longer than that, and stored possibly outside.
My mechanic has told me that the bottom end isn't a big worry, but that the head has the most issues.

Picked up a pair of AE82 indicators. I wasn't sure, but yes, AE82 front indicators fit in AE86 front zenki bumper bars. You just need to drill a small hole.
My housings were all smashed up and poor condition. Also, will probably make up some clear lenses. Haven't decided whether to cast some, 3D print some, or just be lazy and use fluoro light covers haha.

but it's masked and in the oven ready for paint tomorrow morning.

    Next update will be exciting!

Does anyone know more about pistons than me? There are soo many options out there, my head's spinning haha.

I have a pretty good idea about pistons, feel free to send me a PM if you like and I'll point you in the right direction.

Lol, we did! And I would, but yours are low comp ones - no good for an N/A build

WELL! It's finally painted! Lots of pics for those interested.
Painted in PPG 2K white. No tinters or other colours added (you'd be surprise what normally goes into a white to dull it down slightly)
    Very happy with it all.

    Masked, cleaned and tack-ragged.

Boot lid had to be painted separate because it wouldn't all fit in the booth in one go.

    Cheers guys!

Where on earth do you start putting a whole car back together?
Far out. Trying to find where I've put everything between home/garage/the workshop. All in ice-cream containers and stuff.

Thinking I'll put all the dash in, through carpet in, then all the other bits and pieces.

Over the last two days I haven't done tooooo much.
Fitted the rear hatch, all the door rubbers - drivers ones are pretty average, at some stage someone either locked keys in the car and damaged the rubbers trying to break in, or it was attempted to be stolen - looking to buy some. Fitted up the headlight loom, bonnet support rod. Fitted up the door handles and mechanisms. My locks are broken so might pick up some Solex's. Cheaper than OEM, don't know about more secure?

Can't find my hatch boot lock anywhere. Looked in all the boxes around.

    Rubbers just fitted on.

Now it's all coming back.. what I still need to buy.
Gotta head down to Knox carpets and get new carpet. Gotta get a radiator and a few engine bits sorted out - haven't heard from my mechanic or the cam place just yet. Will pick up some 4" speakers from Jaycar for the front and rear. Someone has cut holes in the ADM rear speaker "shelf" things. Get some card for the rear hatch cover and door trims - will re-do them.

    LOTS AHEAD!

Brake lines are all done and working
No fuel sorted out just yet, but that's pretty much all under car. So shouldn't be a worry. More thinking about interior and body at the moment
