hey guys jst got home from some spirited driving. on the way home i noticed a weird ticking noise from inside the car. at first i thought it was the gearbox area but the noise is coming from the passenger side where the glove box is.
i popped the bonnet and there is a ticking noise around the injector area. the noise is progressive so has the rev gains the noise and speed of the ticking does also. its really weird never had this noise b4
its really annoying anyone have any idea wot it is?
edit: video!

you can hear the ticking noise towards the end of it around 1.30 onwards.sounds like a lawn mower or someshit to try and describe it. you can hear me feather/play with the throttle and you can make out the ticking noise along with engine sound, diff whine and my gay gear box.
comment!

Gonna need to put a video of that shit up bro, or get someone to look at it IRL.
Things like this are hard to accurately diagnose on 'teh interweb'

injector pulse
Injector opening / closing does not get louder after a drive.

p.s. I am going to be all over this thread for the next few hours in an effort to stamp out all the mechanical hearsay that is very commonly associated with threads like this one. Usually this results in you throwing parts at the car until it gets fixed or you take it to a mechanic.

ill see if i can get video going soon theres alot of other shit going on in the car so its hard to jst pin point the noise in the video but ill try my best to get it. not sure if this helps but my fuel light started to flicker on and off as i was sliding i was low on petrol but not that low could this hav any contribution?

Not really.
Fill the blanks here -
Is the noise there / better / worse
Engine cold / hot
Does it worsen under load
Are there any conditions under which the noise changes / fluctuates

engine warm
start to notice it after certain rpm
noise is there you can clearly hear it at a low rev and high gear - jst like u hear ur diff but instead of that a ticking noise
higher u go thru the revs the more u can hear it and the faster it sounds not sure if it gets louder but u can certainly hear it with gearbox rattle and 4age roaring at 5-6k rpms

Sounds like a tough one man.
Gonna have to get that video up or get a competent mechanic to look at it IRL.

it sounds like the valve/lifters are ticking which is a common problem when the oil your using is to thin or it is getting to hot after spirited drives
nulon do an engine additive which will fix it up or you can just use a different oil which is a little thicker to stop it

yup sounds like ur discribing lifter noise, a lot of other cars have this sound aswell, second hand mostly, ive went to have a look at a S15 for a friend and got the lifters on idal was amazingly loud,...tick tick tick tick tick tick i was waiting for the BOOM...

oh yea? well yes the oil was getting warm....im using penrite 10w-50 semi syntehic waiting to get my new cams in before i go full synthetic, and i got a gay dizzy leak so i cud see smoke coming from under the bonnet after im waiting for my turn....i'll go for a drive later see if the noise is still there....hopefully its gone! cuz its shitting me up the wall

Man, I'm gonna go with manifold gasket is fucked, or hole in extractors, if you have 'em.
Has the car being back firing or anything ( more then normal )?

hasnt been back firing at all. got jdm factory extractors

yea i guess that wud be the go havnt driven it yet cars low on fuel waiting until 2moro to pour some petrol.... free this weekend chris?

without knowing all the details i would check out for a exhaust manifold leak.

You guys are both very wrong....

Because this man is right.
See what i mean about mechanical hearsay?
bring it round when we do thbe clutch and i'll try and diagnose andy
This is what needs to happen. It IS starting to sound like it could be an exhaust manifold leak, however it needs to be diagnosed properly as i've said earlier. Video or Mechanic mate FTW.

Get someone to block the exhaust (with a rag - careful, hot) while you're under the bonnet to see if there's any change in teh noise. If it's a manifold leak (which sounds possible) then it 'should' get louder. Check for soot around the flanges, carefully see if you can have a feel for exhaust gases leaking out as well.

it acutally might be an manifold/exhaust leak...... i had a listen to the extractors and they dnt sound right... i played around with the throttle and something seems wrong with the exhuast theres no back fire but there another weird noise about it. but i hav got an incar video of the sound on my phone ill upload wen i get home from uni. but yea i might give that ago with the rag
EDIT: if i do happen to have a manifold leak.....anyone point me in the right direction in getting a new gasket? ive got original jdm factory extractors/headers woteva u want to call them
hao.

Your local Rapeco, Supershit or Autobarn should be able to help you out. If they can't help, lord have mercy.

My mate has a cammed and blown xr8 he was flogging it then it started making a really bad ticking noise after searching many things the last thing we checked was the exhaust and we found a tiniest piece of exhaust gasket came off. We though it was from one of the heads.
Some 4-1 headers/extractors can make ticking noises too. I've seen many 4-1's that make a ticking noise through the merge collector. Sometimes with my XR8 you can't hear it but other times its quite loud. Especially if you're at the lights between two cars or say in a maccas drive through.

It's most likely leaky exhaust manifold gasket. When they leak, it sounds like a loud ticking/tapping noise under load.
Ask for an ae82 4age exhaust manifold gasket, and also best replace the two crush rings at the same time too (on the secondaries flange- again ask for two from an ae82 4age).

All i can hear in that video is exhaust leak :P
But do change both like I said in my other post. It should solve your issue.

When I had holes in my extractors the car used to shoot massive flames, once lit a leaf on fire on the side of road near Mt Nebo.
And the exhaust gasket has fucked up on my 4K asewll as my old 4AC and 7AFE's.

im going to say it straight up, it is the 'crush ring gaskets' (as nikko put it) between the primaries and the secondaries.
replace them and i am almost positive the noise will go away.
Nikkojoe
12th March 2010, 02:28 AM
it even could be the nuts have come loose on the secondaries flange causing the leak. But if they are custom made secondaries using a random custom flange, the crush rings may not seat properly and therefore leak.

awesome it does seem to make the weird noise more over the manifold side so ill get that changed and we'll see if theres any improvement...hopefully there is....so its
1.exhuast manifold gasket x1
and
2. crush rings x 2
for ae82 4age? gangster shizz

You should think about getting your extractors machined flat as well. Gets kinda hot under there and your extractors may have warped. Last time I did a exhaust gasket, i replaced it only for it to blow again a week later :(

sounds like the big end bearings knocking the sump, this only happens when the oil is hot and the oil filter is too free flowing. of course according to my hearsay experiece

Cocaine's a hell of a drug, son.
Exhaust leak. Machine extractors, replace gaskets, cease worrying.

To pin-point the sound, get some rubber hose/tubing about 1m in length, 3/8"ID.
Put one und up to your ear, the other end systematically move it around the area you think the noise is coming from. Quite easily you will be able to identify where the noise is coming from as it will get louder. The tubing helps shield noise from other area's of the engine bay.
And use genuine gaskets, the SHIT you get from local autostores is cheap for a reason.

Never had a problem with non genuine stuff, and I even re-used it many times when I had my engine issues. No leaks :)
Sometimes though, genuine are actually not that expensive (specially for intake gaskets, cheaper than the aftermarket and it's easeir to get).

machining really needed? mate told me to use brass exhuast silicon as well
yes?yes?yes?
Todd
14th March 2010, 03:16 PM
machining not 100% necessary, but depending on how old/bad they are it might be worth thinking about.
would only be about 30 bucks to get them faced, and save you a whole lot of pain/financial annoyance if u were to keep popping gaskets in the mean time.
and yep. any exhaust silicon is good to use. although i have never ever had an issue with maniseal. besides they fact it is fucking crap when u get it all over your hands (wear gloves).

I would, but i'm not you. I try to avoid using exhaust sealant where possible, it's rarely the 'right' way to fix it.
