so i was looking at a new 86 with a 16 valve in it yesterday and it was all sweet except the bloke said that it was going through a bit of oil. he had a hose coming from the back of the cam cover with a one way pressure valve on the end that would vent once it reached a certain pressure.
i'v done a bit of research on the whole pcv thing and its still a bit cloudy. he said he would take it to a mechanic to have it looked at but i was just wondering if anyone thinks there may be an underlaying issue here. as far as im aware i could just fit in a catch can to take up the bad oil? or would it be a problem with the valve stem seals? btw he just spent $1200 on rebuilding the head.
an help would be great before i go further on this car

Could have poo'd rings. Compression test it.

Almost definitely the rings then (if his head has been done)

Makes sense. I did see a bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust.

yeah man, most likely ring, if that's the case do a comp test and appropriate lowballing that follows

i do rebuilds all the time.could be looking any thing from $1000 and up.sometimes depending on your cash flow can be much cheaper to replace the engine.i have plenty of engines to choose from. drop me a line 0414 531 273.

Couple of hundred, give or take.
There's a guy in brissy called 'Mick Cashell Engines' or something along those lines, and he specialises in supplying rings for anything. But basically any good engine shop can get you something.

One set of hastings rings I bought were $85. Endurotec pistons + hastings rings were 195. Then add to that the cost of a gasket set, maybe bearings if you feel like it/see the need for them. and while it's apart lets put forgies in it for turbo, maybe get rods, get the bearings coated if they already aren't, get a oil drain put in the sump and by now it's sorta cheaper to throw in a replacement engine. but you don't know how long it will last.
A general rebuild (bore + new pistons, bearings, gasket set, tank the block, face the deck) ended up costing me about a grand but you know it'll last forever now. It's all clean and not fucked up, like some import engines.

yes. yes it was. did you buy it? i went away for work for a week and i said i'd buy it if he took it to a mechanic while i was away and he said yeh no worries and i never heard back from him so i left that car alone. seemed like a decent buy minus the engine

what were the specs on those endurotech pistons?? like to suit which motor, what compression, forged? Ie can i put them in my NA smallport 16v and run a supercharger?

uhh, big port: standard replacement so I'm guessing it was standard comp and most likely cast. looked like stock pistons to me, not that I really pick up on details if I'm not looking. I did go back to engine tuner and asked about turboing it and he said 10 or so psi would be fine but he was hesitant about 20 psi. haha.
BUT you're talking smallport and higher compression. just do it, it's not gonna blow up unless the tuner's a complete idiot.

yeah, i bought a "4agze" noticed that it was in fact an NA smallport with a charger on it, the guy says na its got gze internals. But i've now been told by the guy who actually built it that it has 12:1 compression ACL pistons in it!!! but he couldn't tell me the model number and i can't find any pistons like that in the acl catalogue. So since im not really sure i should go with 12:1 compression with a super charger i am keeping an eye out for some more suitable pistons. LOL

yeah i bought it for 3900, it goes hard, just blocked that hose off, ran a catch can and oil pressure is perfect, compression is sweet, the head was in fact ported, polished and reconditioned and found out its got a slight cam in it, only problem was the guy turned the fuel reg right up and advanced the timing a shitload as to try to fix a misfire in 1 and 2 that would of been the smoke you saw. nothing wrong with the engine mechanically the reason why he had the breather hose from the block was because its a bigport head and a smallport block and the bigport doesnt have the oil drain hole that the smallport head does, so i guess he just didnt know what to do with the hole in the block so he ran a breather that just spat out liters and liters of oil. its just got shitty messy wiring nothing wrong mechanically. looks fucking awesome with the front and rear bar that came with it to. you might see it driving around in the future.
