Hey People,
Just interested in peoples experiences who have moved on from thier 86 to a more modern car. How do you feel now and are you happy with your current ride. Its always a thought at the back of my mind that I want something more modern.
Tell me your stories and feelings!

its not the same. driving gtr's, wrx's, nissan 2L's dont have the same feel. much more comfortabe but not the same.
only newer car id happily own instead of a ae86 is a mx5 but id want a hardtop.
havent had any experience with s2000's but i hear theyre nice but over-rated especially for the price.
just go to your nearest capital capital cityand take some cars around for test drives from car lots. see if theres anything that tickles your fancy

for a daily drive anything is better than the ae86, if its for fun... the ae86 is hard to beat (money to fun ratio, ke70 is ok but still needs to much work to get more fun out of it)

Yeah Ive driven lots of different cars, jdm 89 MR2, 98 Beams MR2, Skyline R33, WRX's, integra's, Civics, blah blah and lots more. They all have a nice modern and comfortable ride but they dont have that spark of something different like the 86. I love my car more than anything but honestly as and everyday driver.....It pisses me off. its a love hate relationship. I cant see myself selling it ever and I know I'll miss it when I do.

Comfort and shit's overated. I'd prefer to drive my ae86 than an S class merc because one's fun to drive and the other isn't, simple as that. You'd be kicking yourself when you come across a fun stretch of road and your in the daily, you just know you'll be thinking, damn wish I had my ae86 with me right now. But nope, you bitched out and drove the daily so your loss.

the constant maintenance on a daily ae86 is fucking rediculous, i racked up 9000km in 3 months, all the shit i gotta fix from doing that is just rediculous (all after the lucky 2.5 year stint of 0 problems)
imo stuff upgrading, just buy a daily and keep the ae86 for fun times

ive been driving an EVO IX TMR for the last 7 months, i STILL dont really like it, i honestly and truly would prefer to drive my 86, sure leather seats and copious amounts of grip and power are cool to have but they really take away the skill in driving, besides no one thinks your a douche when driving a loud-low-caged-stiff 86, whereas the same theory applied to the evo and people think your a wanker

Constant maintenance? I've had mine for well over a year and it's no worse than any other car I've had, hell it's even better than most of them. There's barely any maintenance needed other than oil and filters, which is cheaper to do on my car than it is to service a newer car via dealer. Win win for me

i cant say much for ae86's as i havent got one yet (working on it!) but ive allways had old cars, and most recently i had a s2 rx7. It was loud as hell, twitchy on all but the smoothest roads, shot flames everywhere, cost an arm and a leg to run and eventualy i got over having to keep two cars on the road.
So, i went out and bought a brand new ford fiesta xr4, thinking it would be like the modern day equivalent of an ae82 twin cam. Biggest mistake ever.....
The xr4 makes more power and torque than the rx7, probably handles better too, it has leather seats which are comfy (unlike the rx7's fixed bucket) the heater and air con work extremely well, the stereo is good, i get the same millage in one tank that i got from 3 in the rx7, you can have a conversation with another person in it too!
Now all of these things sound great, and if that's the sort of things that are important to you, then go get a new car. IF, you really enjoy driving your car, feeling the road through the wheel and your bum, feeling the brake pedals connection with the brakes, and the accelerator pedals connection with the motor then stay with the ae86. The xr4 is better in every way, but it has removed me from the driving, everything is dulled down and it feels a bit like im driving a daytona machine.
just my 2c.
ps. im selling the xr4 and buying a sprinter lol

i went from an ae86 to an jzs147 aristo the back to an ae86. I wanted something luxury and something with a bit of go and something no-one really has (well its rare in nsw to see one) but i traded the jzs147 for an turbo ae86. Its been sitting down the back for the last 7 months doing nothing and i have thought of getting rid of it for something more newer but when i did that with the aristo i always wanted the sprinter back, its just something about them that makes them addictive lol
Moral of the story, you dont know what you've got till its gone. LOL

I'm going to agree with Glenn, new cars don't offer the same driving feel as an old car simply because a lot of them use fly by wire and have power steering systems that kill the feeling. The reason these systems are implemented is usually for safety features, for people who can't drive for shit. Traction control, abs, stability control etc all take away control from the driver. Now for your average a-b dumbshit motorist that's great, but for us, people who enjoy DRIVING a car that shit's just horrible. When I drive a car, I want to be the one in controll, give me a raw machine and not some technologically removed computer on wheels, there's just no fun in that.

20th February 2009, 09:09 PM
As someone who drives new cars every day, they just aren't fun. like others have said you can't feel the road, even driving a manual is boring. Fly by wire is the most retarded thing ever, theres literally half a second delay between the time you touch the pedal to when the engine responds.
I don't think i will ever buy a car that was made after 1995. They make all these safety features to make the cars safer and easier to drive, instead of making people better drivers. And it shows, there are some real terrible drivers with brand new cars that can't even reverse park.

20th February 2009, 09:32 PM
I like modern cars... for some things. I often drove my Mum's auto, 2000 model Corolla wagon. About as boring as you could find, but it was great when you just needed to go and grab something a few suburbs away, or were heading away for a weekend and taking lots of stuff. Driving to Sydney and back in a loud, low, stiff, bucket seated Sprinter is a pain.
It just all depends what you want to do in your car.

i was faced with this a few months ago when i had to do something with my daily, as it was heading to the stage where it was worth nothing...
currently i own an ae71 which isnt legal in any sense of the word, but i liked driving it so much i almost had the effort to make it as legal as possible, and use that.
the problem was, i have to use the car to drive to meet potential employers / demonstrate i know the shit they are to hire me for, and its not really ideal with me stepping out of a dumped, rusted, loud, 20yr old faded corolla sweating like hell and smelling like petrol.
it sucks that people sometimes think like that... but the people who cant even manage their morning turd, just judge how good you are by what they see.
so in conclusion i got a nice, normal daily and keep my ae71 for obvious reasons.
Vance

yeah get a daily. dailys ftw.
if you must sell the ae86 and buy a newer car get an mx5. you can do all the usual ae86 mods like dropping it on its guts, get a loud exhaust and it still looks like youre driving your girlfriends/grandparents car.

I am not an oh,, it must be an 86 man or you will die kind of person...
But If I had to go out and buy a new car tomorrow for work, a sensible car, I dont actually know what I do.
Over the past few years Ive driven every hire car available in Europe & hated em all, except 1, the new HDI Seat Leon limited Sports Edition leon, I brought it to a large Quarry at 4am & was well impressed.
Cars are just so plain now.
Im very fond of my ST185RC but if I faced facts its only because Im a Rally fan that I think its a good car, its actually very average.

went a more modern honda after my last ke70. I love the honda, it's bloody bulletproof and comfy as shit, no winding window handles and tweaking chokes...
However I miss the stripped, loud, stiff bumpy keto. It was slower, noisy to the point of hearing loss, embarassing to own in certain company, but it made me feel like someone using their arms and legs to move a simple machine around, a driver. Feeling bumps with your wrists, oversteer with your guts...
Modern comfort in a car makes you feel more like a passenger. Using two fingers to point an automatic luxury barge where you want it to go would kill my love of driving.
As would having more power than any other car.
The day I'd prefer to be a passenger will be the day i die.

Intense, it's fruitless to compare an AE86 and a modern car. When you look at them side by side the differences between them make them a completely different car. You can't look at an orange and call it an apple, the same goes for looking at modern cars compared to old cars. The key is to sit in a modern car and understand that the dynamics of it will be completely different. Once I got this through my skull, the limitations are endless and makes driving any car a much more rewarding experience because you look at each car seperate rather than comparing them to anything else.
I've test drove an EP3 recentely and am pretty much sold on it. It's the most comfortable drive I've ever been in but on the limit it is as testing as my old AE86.

I was more talking about a modern daily driver, ie new corolla, yaris, tiida, camry, focus, mazda 3, etc. I've driven both a tiida and a yaris and they're horrible to drive. Comfy, easy but boring as bat shit. You just feel so removed from the car that even though you're in control of the car it doesn't feel like it.
If you're talking about a more modern performance orientated car then yeah the options are wide open because they're designed with the driving feel in mind, it's a crucial element in the cars design.
But say if I had the option of taking my ae86 to sydney or my mums auto yaris. You can bet damn well I'd be taking the ae86 for the reasons mentioned above.

haha anything is gonna be better than an ae86 :)
1980's jap cars suck arse, you can make modern cars handle awesome aswell if you want something to throw around.
youll be happy with a modern car just becuase its not the ae86 haha.
my sprinter is the most loud, anoying and uncomfortable friggen car and even when i jump into shitty vr commo or anything over 89-90 its almost a pleasure to drive comparing to the 86.
there are so many cars out there you will find what you want.

agree almost gone are the days of 80s & 90s cars in 5 years they will be too old to drive & with future compulsory air bags & safety standards they will be obsolete, even today they are flying coffins thats for sure. still savour these days my friends.

Agreed, IX is a fucking uncomprehendable quick car that (as the broshure says) actually bends the rules of physics, but it doesnt make ITB induction noise, so it fails, note im taking the evo to hidden valley tomorrow and hope to decimate all with overnight parts from japan

i use to be like that but now i actually like driving my missus lancer
its slow but i like the power steering, windows, mirrors, aricon, etc
you also have piece of mind that nothing going break/fail because its not 24years old
for me i'd choose anything comfortable for a daily

well guys.
i actually sold my 2002 IS200 to buy my hachi as a daily driver
so i went from climate control and heated seats,
to no air con and loud and noisy.
i love the ae86, buuuut the is200 was nice
depends if you love the modified car scene, cause i couldnt justify doing anything to the lexus.......
but i dont regret selling it for a 25 year old toyota. :)

22nd February 2009, 03:15 AM
I always said if push came to shove, my IS200 would be out of my driveway before the AE86 :P I really appreciated the style, smoothness and comfort in the Lex as the 86 got more modified over the years, but everytime I drove the hachi I had a grin from ear to ear.
At the moment I'm not really sure what I'm going to drive here... but I'd love to get another AE86 rather than a Euro tourer, but we'll see ;)
FLCL
22nd February 2009, 03:44 AM
Getting a more modern car id still be inclined to modify the shit out of it. coilovers, larger brakes etc etc.. final destination car would be a Honda NSX (with mods) but realisticly I would be more likely to deregister the 86 buy a car trailer and one of those bomb kitted out vans from japan to tow the 86.
Gilly
22nd February 2009, 07:20 AM
i'm doing this at present for a thousand reasons
pretty much over the slammed caged loud noisey obnoxious car
now want 4 doors, aircon, POWER, and something a little more subtle
so at this stage 1J cressida or a 4 door 32, ticks all my boxes and both are capable of being competent streeters that can still pull skids :)

only one thing. dont try and replace an ae86. because you wont. i had an ae86 as my 3rd car. sold it. have now had several new cars including s15, gt forester. i ended up getting another ae86. currently between me and my mrs we have an is200 for comfort, str navara for tow duties and offroad fun and just replacing the ae86 with another at the moment.

id love a daily, but as a few have said u cant really compare
i drive my old mans 98 luxury honda accord v6, comphy, air, steer, leather etc etc.. but its a boat.. but it also gets you from a to b comfortably, legally and cool or warm, whichever you choose
the 86 on the other hand, low , loud, illegal, and fucking fast
to be honest i prefer driving dads car around, though i kick myself when it rains or something turbo comes up to me on the highway or i go through some good twisties but hey t the end of the day u gotta pick what u want out of the car, i keep the 86 because i am prepared to make the sacrifice of comfortability for the bucketload of fun it is
the honda is good for picking up parts for broken 86 :P

I find a full interior kouki AE86 (especially GT-APEX with all the power options) pretty modernish to drive. It's comfortable, and when you want to, can still have the awesome fun you want when you hit that special corner on the way home from work.
But then, a Chaser, or some other VIP car would be awesome too, really any car will be fun to drive in different ways.

after driving brand new cars at work with ice cold ac, interiors that dont creak and rattle, silky smooth engines and power delivery, nice and soft suspension, it does in fact suck balls getting back in my car with locker, heavy steering, rock hard springs with mismatched shocks, rattling roof skin, no air con ect
but when it rains, its a different story :)

Owning/daily driving an 86' is an unpaid job. You have to work at it, spend money and some days you just wanna quit. But like the 97% percent of others here, sometimes it just makes you smile.
Drive the missus Mazda3 because its comfortable, especially on the motorway. But damn, if you are sleepy, there is NO way the Mazda can keep you awake, no amount of Rammstein, air-con or consumables, its just too quiet and boring. Will own a JZX100 in the future, but never sell the 86 :D

my keto never had anything break, had a flywheel come loose once, but bought new bolts and tightened it back up and that was it.
It had no rattles, no squeeks, it didnt bounce too much, wasnt too noisy, was quite comfy with mazda 6 seats, was great on fuel and handled the highways very well. Dont know what all you guys are complaining about, you either dont maintain your cars, drive them in a manner that just plain fingers them, or are just whiny.

My s14 shits all over an ae86 for daily driving and hard driving. Yes the ae86 is a slightly more involving but it's also slower and harder work and less consistent through the twisties.

QLD roads are great compared to nsw ones.

I don't like the argument that sprinters are less reliable than newer cars... you can make any car as reliable as you like. The problem is most people choose to fix things after they break rather than replace them before they do. Whilst it may seem cheaper to to fix things as they go, its really not in the end. When I built my 71, I replaced everything which really wears out. And that's on a car which has only done 102,000k's.
You can make a car as reliable as you want, just go through and replace the things which fail before they do.
shift_rook
24th February 2009, 10:26 PM
totally agree with golberg here, great point, if you've got a car that's done a couple of hundred thousand k's of course stuffs gonna start stuffing up, as long as you can replace anything that's under strain or large amounts of use you won't have a problem

Fully agree with the lads commenting on how with power steering and other you dont needto know how to drive assists, that it feeld rediculous driving a car on the road. I have a datsun 1200 sedan what comparison that is to an ae86 i do not know, however it handles like a mo-fo goes where i want it too, can out turn anything you will throw at it, a.k.a absolutely love its simplistic design that gives me a "man to road relationship" none of this man to power steering pump" crap. Took the old girls commo for a spin its a VX and god it scared me half to death! the fucken powersteering kept going around the round about and wasnt as responsive, i couldnt feel the turning power i had so i was over steering, drive home quick and said fuck ever driving that heap of shit again!

JDM ae86 as daily hands down, if not then another jap rwd car, 180sx-s15
i drive my sisters trueno as a daily 24/7, not crazy mod what so ever, almost standard..
has air con but needs re gas, PS, no stereo
for what an ae86 doesnt have compared to newer modern cars, its got something else to make up for it and that makes up for the old age of the car
why wouldnt u want to drive ur most loved car as a daily?...
sure the stuff ups are pissoffs, locked diffs...cut springs...dead shocks...rust...different colour panels...etc.etc., list goes on with these oldies...even with a heavily modded street ae86, to loud, to expensive to maintain as a daily...
i dont know, i rather drive something i spend so much time and effort in to get me from A to B in one piece and is able to do what i want it to when i want it to, then some average FF car everday
i guess i can overcome the no air con, stuff ups, old car in general, cuz i just love driving, and driving an ae86 everyday of the year, ADM and JDM...makes it more worth wild....if i didnt or never owned a ae86, any car will do and anything good is a bonus
once u go ae86, theres no moving on and not regretting

24th February 2009, 11:33 PM
the thing that is the worst factor about it is also the best, that its an old, outdated, stiff, angled, easy to work on, responsive shitbox
theres alot of things i love about 86's and theres equally as much i hate.
i want to move on from them, so that i look back with fond thoughts, not shit ones. and i feel i built a nice car, that drives well for what it is, and i'll do that with the next one im doing.
that and theres alot of other cars i want to experience, not just be a one horse bandit so to speak
i think you should just enjoy cars for what they are, sample everything

Ive done the whole second car / modified daily thing and it doesnt work... your daily either ends up getting defected or broken or you pull it off the road to mod it.. If i was going to do it again I would buy the stockest, lowest Km, newest commodore/falcon/ camry/ magna I could get. At least their comfortable and you dont get hassled by cops, you can buy new parts for them from the deli around the corner and your less tempted to do silly things.

i had a newer 98 model corolla with less then 100k's on it i promptly swaped my mum for her mint ke70 an never thought about it again it was just so much more fun, to make it a decent daily all you have to do is buy decent quality parts, replace your bushes, good shocks, stiff springs arn't harsh as long as you have the correct shocks,

I'm with goldberg on the point of reliability....
80's jap cars simply are not "unreliable". Most, when treated right, are F-ing bulletproof.....
Driving a car like you stole it, spending service and maintenance money on shit mods and expecting nothing to ever break........... IS unreliable.

my rx7 is more reliable than my old ae86
my new ae86 is a shell and has just been sitting in the shed for a year
80's junk but fun nonetheless

no way is excels where its at. they are the shittest car ever, every time you drive it you will notice something new thats broken and they fall apart in front of ur eyes. they're compact ff so u cant fix anything in the engine bay because its to inaccessible and if u have an automatic ur fukked takes like half a minute to change gears. i had one before my ke70 and its now sitting in the backyard waiting to get thrashed and burnt.

My daily for quite a while now has been a JZS147 Aristo. Big luxobarge with all the trimmings and a healthy 2JZGTE. Cost me $10.5k landed and complied, with I think 47,000km's on the clock. Fricken great car, definitely beats anything the local market can offer for the money. Put some HKS coilies in it, and have some 18's I'll be throwing on it when I can afford the tyres with my Rudd bonus, lol. Looks hot. :)

I had a new getz as a hire car for about a week while my old car was being fixed. I was super surprised at how good it was. It was solid, had a good interior, good little (underpowered) motor, the steering wasn't dull and vague and overly light like a yaris or a jazz, the seats were great and it had full pwr windows and central locking.
Left a really good impression on me.

Well they do pretty well in reliability surveys...

correction, they do well in cost of ownership surveys, my gfs friend has one, same deal gear box replaced, and its an auto. Not many modern autos should or do die in the ass.
I admit hyundai is getting better on a whole, but a getz is an economy box, so is yaris and jazz, go one step up, to civic, corolla etc and you are looking at some decent well made solid cars. You can get a second hand rolla, 04ish in really good condition with like 35k on the clock for under 12, which is what you pay for a new getz, i know what I would rather have.

You'll never replace an ae86, but they suck balls as a daily (most anyways).
My wrx is a killer car to drive around, looks/power/grip/comfort but i havent driven it for about a year and a half, to be honest i dont like the bad attention anymore. I'd rather cruise around under the radar and not have to worry if i'll make it into this driveway or it there is a cop around the corner etc
I've driven ALOT of new car ranging from the usual jap stuff to ever car in the bmw range as well as holdens/madza/honda etc. best car out of the lot and my next car is a 4.4 X5. i'll probably get ripped for this but the car from the factory has everything you'll ever need in a car minus a fridge, crazy power for a suv and bullshit comfort. it even handles and tows well lol. i'd get the escalade i drove around LA for 3 weeks but i dont have 180k lol (fuck australia with our taxes and shit-there like 60k in the states)
but seriously any car you buy for around 30k these days will have everything you want with comfort, enough power, warranty etc. i was actually hugely impressed with the new sv6 60th anniversary ute i drove the other week.

I have had a few.. Gx81, currently S14. I think the thing I miss the most about driving the 86 all the time is its unique sound and handling. Just the package that it is some how is perfect in its own little world. The sound and feeling/feedback is something else, even if it is slow.
I'm currently rebuilding mine back into a nice comfortable daily that can comfortably hit the track or a skid pan day. Then I will probably sell my S14 :)

"The results of this year’s Which? reliability report are out and for the second year running Hyundai vehicles have been classed as Excellent.
The survey was compiled from 34,277 questionnaires, which were completed by randomly chosen Which? readers who own a car of up to eight years old. Questions were based around the customers’ experiences over the last 12 months and concentrated on the three main aspects of reliability: breakdowns, faults and niggles.
Hyundai was rated Excellent overall by Which? readers in the first section of the survey.
The second section of the survey concentrated on new car breakdowns and analysed the reliability of vehicles up to two years old and how they have performed in the last 12 months.
Results showed that 32% of new car owners can expect a fault in the first two years of ownership and 6% can expect to endure a breakdown – but not if you own a Hyundai Getz.
Hyundai’s supermini has once again proved its worth by achieving 100% reliability, beating the likes of the Ford Fiesta and Nissan Micra; heavyweights in the supermini sector. The Getz is Hyundai Car (UK) Ltd’s biggest seller with 9,529 units having already been sold this year."

I don't care what some crappy survey says, personal experience has told me a completely different story. Agreed, Hyundai have tried to rebrand themselves, and consequently may have improved production design and quality, and Kia might be a little better than they used to be, but still, I haven't known anyone personally to have had an "outstanding" relationship with either stable.
Until someone I know personally uses their money and shows me the light, I'm not willing to bet my dosh on material found on the internets that may or may not have been swayed by a well funded marketing department.

All were at hand on the first page of a google search :D
At the moment I like hyundai more than I like toyota. Toyota's dropped out of all motorsport, cancelled development of anything remotely sporty, and keep making the same old mistake of making some of the blandest cars in the world. Honda's even worse. They've cancelled development of the new NSX, the new Integra type R, pulled out of motorsport etc etc.
More on the topic of this thread, this is what I want for a daily:

Nope the V8 comes in the OTHER genesis, the sedan. It's a rwd luxo barge. The genesis coupe pictured above is available in a 4cyl turbo 2l - rumoured to be an improved and modernised version of the mitsubishi 4g63, and also comes with a 3.8L (I think) v6 which sounds sexual.

i used to be all harcore "i love ae86s" and shit... anywhoo, i made the move to a mid engined car that has just the right balance of comfort and pureness..... aw11 mr2.
i still have my trueno, but feel no need to drive such a car now.
although that said, a nice standard modern car would be nice.... im looking at a mitsubishi lan evo as im not a fan of crabwalking.
edit... those genesis are nice. good to see korean bringing nicer cars.

/\/\ they might end up with the circled T badge in aus like the previous Tiburon.
regardless, It's a bloody good move by hyundai, and will be one of the best bang for your buck new cars without a doubt. unless they manage to get the chassis all wrong...
hard to see how they'd go wrong though, similar layout as say... 200sx which went off sale half a decade ago. still more sought after than the 350Z. The brand will put some off... but....
2.0 turbo RWD coupe, hopefully light and cheap= winner. will sell. get ready to see assloads of these around if they are selling em here. there are enough tiburons, and they are FWD with average motors.

I like Bug Eye 2001 STI >> 2002-2005. But of the GD lineup 2006-2007 got it right. End of the day its still a WRX so... it's up to you :P stylewise it's like they took a step forward then 2 back, and with the new hatch took a wild jump 2008-2009. but the hatch seems to be making a comeback in many forms.
Speaking of Subaru and Toyota concept: would be cool if and when it happens... I'd get one for a daily ;)

More like the latest Focus (and Mondeo) too many cars these days are looking alike :(
That Hyundai has biten the style of so many cars I don't where to start!
BMW Z4, Porsche Cayman, Nissan 350Z, Lexus IS-F to name a few... but still looks quite well proportioned, except for that rear window line is all wrong - should follow the doorline or body crease up.

I agree... Looks like there are a number of small similarities but as a whole it's pretty uniquely hyundai I think... As far as the rear window line - I think that's one of the better parts of the cars design. Didn't like it at first, but now I do.
