View Full Version : Cutting front strut for short stroke

If you were to use short stroke front shocks/insert, the way I understand it is that you should cut the strut and use a small spacer to get the proper bound/rebound. The question I want answered is - is there an easy place to cut?

What I understand is you shouldn't cut from the top because you need the threaded section, and if you go to the trouble of cutting the middle and welding it back together you might as well weld on a coilover sleeve kit at the same time.

Or am I just on the wrong track??

Like you say, you need to cut the strut furthur down, but to keep it strong, you should probably put a collar of some sort around the join. It would be hard to do this without cutting off the spring perch. Would just be easier to go to coilovers, but there might be a way to do it.

have you gone to club4ag

check that out i did that and it rocks.. well i have no issues with it
using koni sleeves and top hat
t3 camber plates
tokico hts 102's
and ajps springs

don't cut the top as it is threaded
grind off perch cut on either side
weld back together straight any major stuffup will mean your insert may not go in
or the cap that holds the strut in sert in will not tighten down

and easy place to cut is to cut is where the welds are where the spring perch use to be.

to make coilover it's pretty much:

grind spring perch
cut strut (i did this on the spring perch)
chuck sleeve on
weld sleeve together with the bottom part of the strut
chuck the seat and locking nut on
bang the other pipe in so that it sits nicely with the other pipe
weld the top of the sleeve with the pipe with the threaded section
make sure that you make sure both pieces of pipes are on together/connected

rxbenny, did you have to redrill the hole in your top hat?

i had to bore out the top hat so it would go on my strut and make up a custom spacer to stop the top hat from fouling on the cambertop.

Gabriel from t3 reckons it is wrong but i prefer my theory of no shearing forces acting on the top of my strut if that makes sense.

What do you guys think of the T3 coilover setup? Has anyone used them?

Gabe's car (the owner of t3) the f20 trueno that appeared in BMI hot version American touge, Tsuchiya told him he's car is really well setup.
He's using KYB agx coilovers (mr2) http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ph34r.gif
