G'day...

Been thinking about this for a while...some time ago I read about a Sprinter with a 1ggte, with a T50 behind it(Think it was Zoom - silver car with polished manifold featured in IDB Automotive ad)..apparently the bearings in the gearbox had been replaced with larger ones - the insides machined to fit...

Anyone know about this...is it the gears ot the bearings in the T50 that are the weak point ??

Would the cost of doing this be worth the effort or is the w58 a better option...

I am going quads with big cams on a 4ag and need reliability for the occasional drift day......

Thanks in advance

personally i dont beleive bearings are goin to make much difference. In my experiance, its the syncros and input shaft that are the weak spots on a t50. But lets face it, they are getting old now and are bound to break sooner or later.

This is coming from someone who has just stripped 2nd behind a stock 20v. So the motor will not make much difference (unless it has one of them dirt turbos on it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif ) depending how you drive.

i've only broken one under boosted conditions.. but NA.. i caine the piss out of it everysingle time.. and always flat change.. and alwas pop the clutch... tis what i built it for.. and it is fine.. AFAIK it hasn't even had a rebuild.. just use auto fluid instead of normal G/box oil...

it is the mid range torque that smashes them, not the powahz

slightly off topic, but just wanted to know exactly what the advantages of using the T3 delrin shifter bush are..........is it merely a replacement for and old worn item or does it give the box a nicer shift ect?

get a second box as a spare http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

lie Dave said T50 behind an N/A motor

W58 for the boosted boys, you will break T50's in boosted applications, get a W58 and leave som 50's for the rest of us!

the bush give a better feel cos of the slop in a 20 year old shifter.. the rebuild kit is prolly the better way to go.. that circulur green cup bush they refer to prettymuch dissapears over time.. you can get them genuine from toyota cheap anyway.. just pop down to spare parts and grab a gasket, bush, and seal. for the rear extension housing..

the auto fluid just makes my g/box not crunch.. it just slips into gear all the time..

G'day...

Thanks for the input fellas....

I remember reading that Josh Young was stripping gears with a NA 4ag...from clutch kicking...

The reason behind bigger bearings I thought would be to reduce the flex of the bearings(or shafts) which leads to lesser meshing of the gears allowing the gears to work on the edge of the teeth rather than when properly meshed there would be less deflection and less liklihood of stripped gear teeth......(meh...I know this is shit grammar..I hope it makes sense)

What's your thoughts...

i have no idea on price... i bought mine years ago.. was the first thing i did.. and the T3 shifter kit i bought (highly recomended) came with all the new gear..

as i said befor.. the auto fluid replaceing the manual g/box fluid will turn a notchy crunchy i don't like changing gear at high RPM T-50 into a slick shifting drift box..

and no it doesn'e hurt them..

but best to rebuild the box.. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif
