When I got my 20v, it was clean as with red coolent inside

then i switched from red coolent to green as it was more readily available to buy

I mixed it with distilled water at first.... then toped it up with tap water (ran out of distilled)

after a few weeks when i opened the cooling system the water wasn't green it came out brown as... and there was rusty gunk everywhere.

What did i do wrong?

Red and green coolant should not be mixed (I have heard). If you change from one to the other you need to flush the system with straight water before switching.

But to answer your question, no tap water wont have caused this problem.

Hard to say what the problem is without a closer inspection.

yup switching from red to green with no flush= corrossion

best flush it asap, u dont wanna block your acilliries in the motor causing it to overheat or crack

flush the system, drive it for a couple of days, flush it again, drive a couple of days....keep doing that until you are able to drive the car for a week or so without the coolant going brown.

it just sounds like your engine needs a bit of a clean mate http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

red coolant is meant to a little different in composition, they use on originally track cars so if they have a smash and drop fluid its not a slipperry as the green stuff....what i was told a while back

the corrosion inhibitors can have a chemical reaction! this is what has happened, drain your system and flush and refill with water ONLY, dont waste coolant, flush with water only, then when it is clean, then re fill with red only...cheers

go to your local toyota and get a 4L bottle of genuine coolant.. after you have flushed it with a good quality radiator flush..

hasn't this topic been coverd a few times or something very very similar in the last few weeks?

can't say it enough times.. it is some of the best stuff i have ever used!
