Tappet clearance won't shake your car.
A misfire will.
Replace plugs / leads / points.
Unfortunately i don't happen to know the point gap off the top of my head :P
Search rollaclub.com, or buy a haymes manual, only around $30

0.017" is ok for the points gap. Spark plug gap should be 0.8mm or 0.031"
Ignition timing is aboout 10 degrees at idle at about 650 rpm.
Plugs fire 1-3-4-2, and dizzy runs clockwise.
Plug leads do not need changing that often, check the resistance with a mutimeter. Should be under 24K ohms.
It sounds like you have a air leak at the carby or manifold. To check this, run the motor and spray some WD40 or carby cleaner around the carby and see if it runs better while you are spraying it. If so, you need to reseal the carby on the manifold.
While plugs are out, do a compression test. Expect about 150psi if the motor is good. Maybe 135psi on a older 4K. 100psi is a worn out motor that may run ok. If one is different to the others, you need to take the head off.

The problems which have caused similar symptoms (on various engines) for me have been:
- Vacuum hose not connected causing a vacuum leak
- Injector plug half fallen off, making intermittent contact (OK, not applicable to your situation)
- Spark plug broken or leads around the wrong way (but that makes more of a WRX sound)
