View Full Version : Fuel - Do l use JDM tank, Mod ADM one or Fuel Cell to handle 4AGTE now

Have a 1985 ae86 which previous owner started doing conversion to 4AGZE. Dropping the super charger and using car for track so was wondering if l should waste my time moding the existing tank to handle EFI or get a jap one or just go straight to fuel Cell. Will be driving on street a little as well so keen to find options that reduce smell like tanks built under the car etc
Was wanting advice and suggestions and if anyone has done the fuel cell option who did it for them am based in syd

Easiest solution is to buy a jap tank and use that.. works a treat.
Otherwise under car surge tank ajps sells works good too with a lift pump in the tank.
Or mod the ADM tank.
They all work, unless u are putting out crazy hp you won't need to do too much to the fuel setup.

Have a surge tank from az customs was thinking that with a lift pump and thats done then. Like the idea of the fuel cell as seems cleaner solution for track and later a targa. Not chasing huge around 200kw for now

have a look at my technical article on this might suit your needs and found it to be really cost effective :)

Saw that dude great write up. Question was more around the sense of it. As since its a track focus l dont mind spending the little extra if need be for a fuel cell and running e85

fuel cell will probably affect resale value if you ever go down that route. unless the car is track only due to defects. simplest solution would be to use a jap tank and that will eliminate the need for a surge tank and lift pump. but it not too hard to throw a lift pump on the adm tank and feed a surge tank to bosch 040 pump.

For what it's worth, I used to run factory fuel lines and just a VL Turbo fuel pump mounted under the fuel tank for my old 4AGTE. Didn't have any surging issues at all, so long as the tank was above 1/4 full.
Sure it isn't the 'best' option, but it certainly served it's purpose.

No car can be rego'd no problems. Needs to have surge for track. Might just use adm one and lift pump as well and if need be can always go all out after thanks for thoughts guys

Might pay to do the "final" solution now that will exceed your future needs. Fuel cells imo aren't that expensive

You will have to check the regs for targa regarding fuel systems. But 4agze will not be an eligible swap for a targa class.

Why not go normal cell with external surge and pump? Or is it one of things to get just for the sake of it

Why?
if you haven't noticed I like things to be extremely neat...which means minimal fuel lines and wiring...
the other being my expectations of this car are such that it'll be a level above 99% of other examples and a cheapo jegs or otherwise fuel cell won't cut it...

Thought as much now if you can just finish your car and l and ogle at it l will be happy. p.s have those spare window clips looks like might have between 8-12 will no once l put windows on in 2 weeks after paint done

Hey mate. Cost about 2k from memory but thats back in etch primer as well and he picked it up and dropped it back off. He took off all the old bog and did entire car underneath and all panels and inside as well so well worth it. Let me hit all the rust spots with ease and find them all

Ah ok considering doing same for my 86 does he do all the rust repair before etching? Within reason?

If you are eventually going with E85, I would suggest getting a stainless tank fabbed up to fit in place of the standard tank with inbuilt swirl pot. You will also get a little bit more fuel capacity if made correctly. Every bit helps when you only get approx 250km to a full E85 tank. E85 eventually eats everything except stainless and bronze. Granted it will take several years to eat through the steel tank but if you're thinking long term, just bite the bullet now.

Im pretty sure my intank pump is oem. Its very noisy when I put the car on reds. Ive also got a tomei fuel pressure regulator with everything else still oem and I make 180kw in my 4agte. Im actually in the process of going for 200kw+ now on 98. And I plan to use the same fuel setup im using now unless my fuel pressure isnt up to it.
My car ia a jdm ae86. So maybe just getting a decent aftermarket lifter pump is all u need or a jdm lifter as I think that's what I got.

It's been a long while since I updated it (2009) but it shows most of the initial build.

I eventually went with a stack dash instead of the gauges. If your thinking of e85, go for a haltech with an e-flex sensor. Allows you to run normal pump or e85 at any time.

Hmm. It seems external linking to hr doesn't work on driversclub? Just replace the #s with hachiroku dot com dot au

So with all that work you made your 234kw on 98 fuel??

That was on e85. I did have massive boost leaks on the dyno though. It should be a lot closer to 250kw atw.
