using a pole will never get good results. as you will struggle to get the lip folded out of the way with out damading, or pulling the guard out further then you want

using a guard roller you can push that lip all the way up and in without really pulling the guard out at all. and if done right wont wreck your paint.

otherwise i'de use the hammer/dolly approach, takes longer, will wreck paint but will get better results then a pole.
