Thread: Brake Problem

my brakes have been dodgey ever since i bought my ae86. ive bleed them properly (open nipple, push brake lever down, close nipple, release brake lever) and theyre still spongey.

i was told by many people its my master cylinder. so i bought another one in good condition and put it on, bled my brakes and theyre still the same. ive checked the brake lines and i cant see any leaks anywhere so im stumped.

the only thing i can think of it - you know how the piston from the booster moves into the master cylinder, the part of the master cylinder that moves inwards into the tube, how far is this supposed to move into the tube by hand? is it supposed to be hard to move?

on both master cylinders it moves very freely and when the piston from the booster is used (by hand) to push it in it moves almost all the way inside.

the rod stop bolt doesnt do a thing. could this be a problem?

no i havent but shouldnt i get some pressure on the brake peddle even if they arent adjusted right? shouldnt atleast the front brakes work? my peddle goes all the way down and nothing.

it is to my understanding that when you push the foot peddle for the brake the rear works first up to a certain point then the front works.

I had this exact same problem.

Is there any fluid leaking from in between the brake master cylinder and the booster? (tou can tell cos there will be a darkish patch and a tad of moisture around there)

If so, it'll be your master cylinder. I bought a brand new AE71 master cylinder and it bolted straight up and the problem was gone, mind you, 3 other "good condition" master

cylinders were bought and fitted and the problem was still there....until I fitted up the new one.

Hope that helps you out somehow, good luck with it buddy :2thumbs:

nah no leaks between the booster or master.

im actually pretty sure it is my rear brakes not working because my handbrake worked and now it doesnt after i opened up my drums. i just dont know how to adjust them.

anyone able to fill me in on how?

One thing I learnt when i was a freak for originality was the std slave+booster are crap when they start to get a beating. Now she's back in the shed I'm not even thinking about using the rubbish. not really helpful,i know, probably more of an opinion

im with you there mate. crap as.

ive just spent that last hour or so fiddling and have worked out that after opening up my drums that theyre fine. i even readjusted them and tried pressing the foot brake and turning the wheel with my hand, i couldnt. so theyre fine. handbrake is readjusted and works great too.

ive come to the conclusion that either the master cylinder i just bought (original) is stuffed aswell or my booster is stuffed.

the thing is ive never had any leaks on or around either master cylinders. so a few things,

    1) what are the symptoms of a stuffed brake booster?

    2) how much would a s13 booster + master cost and what customizations would have to be done (if any) so it will work on an ae86?

i still want an answer for that one

    thanks

    Hey mate,
For starters, your not bleeding them right. As above, you wrote "(open nipple, push brake lever down, close nipple, release brake lever) and theyre still spongey"
Your mistake is, the first 2 steps you mentioned are in the wrong order. It should be - Push brake lever down, open nipple, close nipple, release brake. Repeat over.

If you are opening the nipple BEFORE you apply the brakes down, It may draw in air. If the system is pressurised (eg Brake pedal applied) and THEN you open the nipple, it is FORCING the air out...

I know this because my Father was a brake specialist mechanic for 25years.......

    glad to help,
