you will be needing to find the clearance tolerance between the bucket and offside of the cam lobe on each valve
buy some shims that will meet such tolerance to fix your problem
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (samuek @ Feb 24 2008, 01:17 PM) </div>4ag engines don't use tappets. They use a shim that sits on top of a bucket.
To change the clearance you need to change the shim to thicker one or thinner, Get out your feeler gauges and find a 4ag shim clearance table. Will take hours and money if they need to be changed.
I paid an engine shop to do it.
Probably best to take it to a Toyota dealer/specialist as they will have an assortment of the shims required and the SSTs. It can be a tedious job, measuring all the clearances, then the shim thicknesses, then selecting the right thickness shim, reinstalling and remeasuring the clearance.
Buy a micrometer and save some money, it's not hard. Just double check it.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (jason @ Feb 24 2008, 02:27 PM) </div>Correct.
I did it a while ago with zero background in it. The "tool" to get the valve collet retainers out is a bit of a prick to make/use but other than that it is pretty straight forward.
Hen
the tools for depressing the buckets down are pretty cheap to buy, then just use a shot of compressed air in the shim hole to pop the shim out.
shouldn't need to play with the collets, you'll end up dropping a valve if you fiddle with them.
Shouldn't need to take the valve collets out. The bucket and shim sit on top of that.
To do it you would measure using feeler gaugers the gap between the cam and the shim/bucket on the back of the cam lobe.
If the gap isn't in specs you would work out what size shim would need to be put in there to make the gap bigger or smaller.
Then just remove cams and do each shim one by one (would have written down what each would need to be before the cams are taken out)
Refit cams once all shims are done. Recheck gap and then done
Hardest fit is working out what size shim isnt needed but its just simple maths
