Thread: Bigport Vacuum/Idle up/Wiring

  1. #1

    Hi, I'm trying to setup a bigport 4age in my AE86 and I have a few questions about the vacuum lines to the Throttle and a few wiring questions.

    1)
    [attachment=23524:engine_004__Small_.jpg]
    This is in the side of the Plenum, are the labels correct?

    2)
    [attachment=23525:engine_001__Small_.jpg]
    Where do these two nipples on the top of the throttle goto?

    3)
    [attachment=23526:engine_006__Small_.jpg]
    Where should each of these nipples go?
    At the moment 1 is connected to 2, 3 is blocked and 4 is connected to 5

    4)
    [attachment=23527:engine_009__Small_.jpg]
    Does this go in the line from the Charcoal Canister to the Throttle? I think thats where it was on an AE82 I briefly looked at

    5)
    [attachment=23528:engine_007__Small_.jpg]
    I'm guessing this is another valve? What is it and where is it supposed to go between?

    6) On the wiring Diagram I am looking at, it mentions an Idle up Computer, I haven't got anything that seems anything like this? What would it look like? and how do I wire up the Idle up circuit?
    Am I correct in assuming the Idle up circuit compensates for load on the engine when things like the thermo fans and headlights are on?

    7) The 4AC had a ballast resistor attached to the coil? does the 4AGE require this? or should I use a coil with an internal resistor (Bosch GT40R instead of GT40?)

    8)
    [attachment=23529:engine_010__Small_.jpg]
    What is this and will I need it with the 4AGE?

    New questions:

    9) The loom that I have has a square connector for the TVIS, but my TVIS has a roundish plug, If I connect this up using wire rather than the plugs, will the TVIS still work?

    10) The loom also has the connectors for the fuse box, and I also have an AE82 Fuse Box. Should I just keep it how it came in the AE86, or should I use some combination of AE82 loom and AE86 fuse box, or how should I set this up?

    Thanks for your help

    Specifically what loom do you have for the engine

    And do you have either the under dash loom and/or the engine bay lights and charge loom for a 4AGE equipped AE86.

    The loom is from an AE82 Twincam, it doesn't have the headlights, but does have the charge circuit. It only went under the dash as far as the ECU. The wires from the ECU that weren't a part of the main loom running into the engine bay were cut (from the 14 pin connector I think).

    OK

    Picture 1 you have labelled correctly.

    Picture 2 ? goes to the idle up solenoid you have asked about in picture 4 (with the green plug), specifically the end nipple, then the inner nipple line goes to the airbox on an AE86, or the I think to the intake tube on an AE82.

    Picture 3: 4 & 5 are coolant feeds for the waxstat. 1 & 2 I think are for the power steering( block these off), 3 goes to the aircon idle up solenoid (picture 5, specifically the F [vacuum] outlet), the other outlet on this valve (e) goes to the airbox.

    There is no point bothering with the two idle up valves in 4 & 5 unless you have the rest of a functioning idle up circuit. On an AE86 this is incorporated into the loom that includes the headlights and charge system from the fusebox in the engine bay around to the junction box in the drivers footwell, then across the car through various diodes within the dash loom to the ECU. Earlier 4AG AE86's then had an idle up computer (a black plastic box slightly larger than a ciggie packet) which clips on top of the ECU. I think later looms incorporated this within the ECU, and I think this was the case with AE82 twincams (?)

    Your interpretation of what it does is correct. Having a functioning idle up circuit makes the car a lot nicer to drive in traffic. But you can get by without it.

    7. You ditch the whole 4AC coil and replace it with a coil/ignitor setup from an AE82. Should plug into your AE82 4AG loom

    8 you throw away assuming you have an internally regulated 4AG alternator. Otherwise you will need to adapt your 4AC alternator and keep this in the charge circuit.

    Thankyou for your help.
    I suppose for the sake of getting this thing going I should just forget about the idle up circuit and then later on down the track if the problem is bad enough, try and fix it up then.
    Unless someone knows the pins on the ECU that I need to be using for the Idle up computer.

    You will need to use an AE82 bigport ECU anyway which I think incorporates the idle up. Someone will know.

    But yes, get it running then worry about it later. If you are serious though, you will save yourself a lot of angst and just source the proper AE86 looms - all three of them. The loom to the rear of the car isn't an issue as you only add one wire.

    But you can do that later. I drove mine without it for about 7 years before taking it off the road and doing it properly.

    You wont need idle up circuit, I never did with my ae82 loom. If you need help wiring it up and have msn messenger, add me to your list (msn details in my profile).

    Car will run crap and not fuel correctly. Dunno why you would have it blocked off...
