Default Microtech LT10 - Submerged in oil..... Would it still work?

    Hey guys.
I got a bit of a strange one here...

I have a microtech that I was planning to use on a 4AGTE I am building. I bought it second hand more than a year ago....

Anyway, after pulling it out of a box, when I had a closer look at it, it was really oily. When I pulled the loom plug out of the ECU, both male and female plugs were soaked. Plenty of oil if there. Looking at the whole thing, all the seams look oily. It looks like it's been submerged!!!!

I haven't opened it up yet. They have these weird star nuts....

If it has been submerged, would it be stuffed? I am not sure what the effect of engine oil would be on the circuit boards and conductivity, as I am not sure how to go about cleaning it. Are there any sprays that are circuit board safe? Throttle body cleaner???

Any ideas, before I do more damage?

There are electrical sprays you can get to clean it up... Jaycar is probably your best bet there.

It is not uncommon for small amounts of oil to come back through 20v looms from the vvt control switch, but if you are talking heaps then its probably why the person sold it.

Inox is electrical friendly.. I spray my bigport ecu circuit board yearly to keep her nice.. Or you can get Electrical contact cleaner.

Google "is engine oil conductive". Seems to say its not/very little..

most PCB have a coating to prevent shorts, components/connects generally don't unless its been designed with waterproofing in mind. A good clean using the above suggestion and throughout drying...be patient here. I'm sure u can run a diagnositics on it to check if its operational after that?

After seeing what is availiable for cleaning it today, cleaning it is not the problem.....
The problem I am having is that I cant open the unit..... Microtech has used these star bolts (or nuts?), which look like an inverted TORX head, (ie would need a female TORX tool, but I have only ever seen them in the male heads....)

I have tried hardware stores, Repco, computer repair shops and none of them has ever seen these types of fasteners.......

Anyone else opened a microtech before?

Gee Steve, It needs to be bigger. Maybe a 50T drill press would do it
