Funny that, got told that when I was a first year apprentice. And I didnt even do an electrical trade

If you have access to some nice cannon plugs (which it sounds like you do), Id be inclined to mount a plug on the firewall to seal the hole, and then run the whole engine loom from that.
I like knowing that I can remove my engine without screwing around with a bunch or wiring and just undoing a few plugs, but thats just me...
Also by recording the pinouts, it makes fault finding later on much easier without tracing the wires.

Thinking go doing the same with my loom... Just allows the ecu to sit neatly up under the dash.

Well it ended up sitting in the factory position and looks really neat. I have been thinking tho, I hope I haven't stuffed up the resistance values of the harness. Have you ever extended a loom Matt? I guess time will tell.
Also what's the go with the speed sensor input to lift the rpm limit. Does it take a constant 12v and could I just run ignition power into it to sort it out?

Speed sensor is a pulse which is sent from the back of the cluter...

Traditionally a purple wire on all the cars i've worked on, the adm clusters have the provision for it, but they are never used. The speed sense also ensures the timing advance is done correctly too, so worth hooking up.
As for resistance, i'm sure the extension will be fine , the change in resistance of the wire would barely be able to be measured you'd think. For the shielded sensors it'd probably pay to do something special with them as a precautionary measure more than anything else.

But for the most part i'm sure you will be fine.
